I am definitely seeing signs of an early winter. It's early August and it's barely getting above 100 here in the Houston area.Darrell wrote:Some trees and bushes are changing color already in a creek bottom at work. They're at least a month early. Anybody else seeing signs of an early fall or winter? I read somewhere the other day that the Arctic saw half as many days above freezing as usual this spring and summer, ~45 days instead of the usual three months. Do the trees know something we don't?

Suit yourself. I'm hoping for a long, cool woman in a black dress. Which, coincidentally, addresses rising temperatures also.JKosprey wrote:I'm hoping for a long, cool fall. It's my favorite season by far.

If my plans for this fall work out, I'll have that too!Aesop wrote:Suit yourself. I'm hoping for a long, cool woman in a black dress.JKosprey wrote:I'm hoping for a long, cool fall. It's my favorite season by far.

I saw geese moving last week, and in Louisiana in the first week of August, that's weird. We normally don't have geese moving until the first week of October. On Friday of last week, I had a small flight of eight Canada geese sail over my house looking for a resting spot. Very strange.
On another note, Tam's post from July 28 said that Indianapolis set a new low record recently, with temps in 50s.
Still, here in Louisiana, the official temperature at my place was 99F yesterday afternoon, and we're looking to match that today. I don't know if we're going to hit triple digits but my plan for the day is to get done quick and be indoors before the noon hour. It's gonna be hotter than a whatchacallit out there.
Driving down main street in Pineville yesterday, I saw a dog scald himself on a fire hydrant. That's hot.

Louisville is just about 90 miles south of lndy. We set a record low, as well. Could the long awaited shift in polarity be the cause? Pardon me while I grab my tin foil hat...

My sister sent me a pic of the thermometer in Dallas a couple days ago. 106. No thank you. I've been acclimated apparently to cooler climes.

(Coastal) SoCal has been a milder summer, plenty of sunshine, but not as scaldingly hot as some years. We've even had the rarely seen summer showers a few times. But the hottest days are traditionally late August and September when the Santa Ana desert winds kick in and the brushfires start in earnest, so we'll see.
All it mainly proves is that even within certain parameters, the weather varies, and on any day when they point out the previous comment-worthy high or low hereabouts, it's always with reference to the last time this happened, usually another day in the previous century, and never prefaced with "this has never happened in recorded history", which points out it's not that big a deal, just normal variation.
The kids who ate paste and skipped science class don't get that, referring instead to the infallibull pronouncements of science genius Al Gore.

Definitely been a cold summer in Indy. My tomatoes have finally started turning red. Of course, this is now my second year of running a decent veggie garden, and I still mostly suck at it. My green peppers and jalepenos haven't been doing a darn thing, but I have three ginormous cucumbers.
Global warming my ass.

Good way of putting it. In 2011, they recorded a temperature of 109 F in Houston. That is the hottest ever recorded since they started in 1889. But they recorded 108 in 1909. 1 degree in 100 years? Is that global warming or measurement error? This spring was also the coldest since 1906. Clearly the global climate change has gone absolutely crazy. Incidentally that day in 2011 was also the day my AC decided to crap out. I was not a happy camper.Aesop wrote: The kids who ate paste and skipped science class don't get that, referring instead to the infallibull pronouncements of science genius Al Gore.
