I am currently perfectly content with the specs on my Razr. I am not a power user, I think. I use my phone for:
1. Reading the Wall Street Journal at Lunch
2. Emails (gmail and work)
3. Navigation/Maps. Traffic data is awesome. Google Now being able to tell me the best route to work and home is even better. The fact that it pops up a warning if there is a jam or wreck is easily the best invention of the 21st century.
4. Phones and Text messages.
5. Pandora

I don't really take photos. I don't download music or books. i don't play games. As long as I can read the WSJ while listening to the rock and roll version of Dixie while having the bacon, eggs, and Mimosa breakfast I prefer, I am as happy as a pig in mud.

That sounds pretty close to most smartphone usage. For me, I do that plus occasionally reading ebooks, streaming youtube, and playing (boring old-fashioned) games. That and a little bit of connectbot (an ssh client).

A certain amount of speed (and enough RAM) makes all that much more pleasant, but there is a point of diminishing returns. A larger, higher-resolution screen - the biggest screen they can fit into the biggest device you can conveniently manage - makes a HUGE difference. The 4.7" 1280x768 screen on my current phone is so superior to the 3.7" 800x480 screen on my old phone it's almost absurd.

That's funny. All of the games on my phone are ones that would be more enjoyable if I had a board and a friend. I have them to kill time when I'm stuck somewhere. Unavoidable delay, too, as Frank Gilbreth would have said.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

I've got a decent variety, but for big ambitious explodey games I have a PC. The phone form factor has limitations. (Don't get me wrong, a smartphone is potentially a VERY good gaming platform, but it's for a casual type of gaming.)

What I find myself playing most often is Freecell, which is good for killing time, or just for taking a quick break... it's almost like meditation.

Should try out "10 000 000" and Puzzle Quest. They seem to satisfy my tastes as someone who likes games with more depth. Haven't tried Final Fantasy 3 or those Gameboy Emulators to play pokemon though.;

You can also try hearts, spades, checkers, backgammon, go...

There are also lots of cute cell phone-specialized games like Fruit Ninja or, dare I say it, Angry Birds.

I like hearts, spades, and backgammon. I never got the point of checkers. I can't bring myself to play something with "Ninja" in the name. I'm contrarian enough, that I'll never play Angry Birds voluntarily.

Don't worry, it's not too difficult. :P It's a cute little game where you ginsu fruit in midair, very harmless.

Now that Angry Birds is no longer hip, cool, and trendy (it's way too mainstream) you can be retroactively contrarian and start playing it now.

I have Freecell and Mah Jong on my phone. I also play Yahtzee and Hangman, in addition to the occasional crossword puzzle. It's saved a lot of aggravation at the doctor's office and in line at the store.
