I've seen the needle
and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
But every junkie's
like a settin' sun.

Neil Young - Needle and the Damage Done

I've seen this. And a junkie is either flamed out or in the process, even though they may have burned brightly for a while.
A gun is a tool, Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.

And there's no sense to be mad
Just the loss remains
We couldn't face the truth but inside we knew
You're gone

The City Lights by Betrayed. Luckily I haven't had much cause to play it lately.

"And I'm scared shitless of what's coming next.
I'm scared shitless, these angels I see in the trees are waiting for me."

"And as the moon rises, he sits by his fire...thinkin' about women and glasses of beer..." Sweet Baby James-James Taylor

As a young child, my parents used to sing us to sleep. Naturally, as my name is James, this was "my" song. My brother, Daniel, wound up with "Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane".

Oddly enough, the songs wound up being somewhat prophetic. I'm an outdoorsman who's spent many a night by a campfire contemplating the mysteries of the universe. Another line in the song, "deep greens and blues are the colors I choose"...well those wound up being my favorites.

My brother wound up leaving us at 18 to accept an ROTC scholarship in Hawaii, and currently serves as an Artillery Officer in the Army. He's traveled quite a bit, and we've spent plenty of nights sending him off into flight. I haven't seen him very much these past 5 years or so.

Then there's this one.

Lyric: Now my widow she weeps by my grave
Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save
Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame
All for a useless and no good worthless claim

In the late '90s I had a girlfriend who liked this song, and every time she played it, I knew that I was in for a night of wild, wild sex.

That I'm proud to be an American,
Where at least I know I'm free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
Who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
Next to you and defend her still today.
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
The first time I heard this song was July 86 in Survival School. Not being a Country fan I had missed it any time earlier in it's release cycle.

I first heard it during the final portions of the "practical" section of the R section of SERE. We were in formation, given an about face and Old Glory was flying from the flag pole that had held a slightly less welcoming flag when last we saw it. I never found out the name of the female Airman that held my hand in a death grip as we all sang the song, but her's weren't the only tears flowing in that formation. I think the dust was affecting some of the instructors as well (the bastards).

I still don't own a copy and can't listen to it without getting more emotional than I find comfortable.
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

Yeah, Lee Greenwood. We just about wore that recording out during Desert Storm.

Whereas Toby Keith recorded probably the most iconic song after the 9/11 attacks.

Unless you prefer the song that Alan Jackson wrote in November 2001.

I do really like this one. Written and performed by Lemmy ( Peace Be Upon Him :D )

He rides a road, that don't have no end
An open highway, without any bends
Tramp and his stallion, alone in a dream
Proud in his colors, as the chromium gleams
On iron horse he flies
On iron horse he gladly dies
Iron horse his wife
Iron horse his life
He lives his life, he's living it fast
Don't try to hide, when the dice have been cast
He rides a whirlwind, that cuts to the bone
Loaded forever, and righteously stoned
On iron horse he flies
On iron horse he gladly dies
Iron horse his wife
Iron horse his life
One day one day, they'll go for the sun
Together they'll slide, on the eternal run
Wasted forever, on speed bikes and booze
Tramp and his brothers, all born to lose

I don't have any attachment to patriotic songs about Britain or England because I have never really felt like I belonged there.
All my life I been in the dog house
I guess that just where I belong
That just the way the dice roll
Do my dog house song
