I was thinking about adding a contact trigger to the side of the shell, that would activate when chambered. My only question is how bright of a bulb would you need out of an 18 inch barrel, and what manner of voltage would be needed to produce that light? I was thinking of using flat watch batteries, which would add to the mass of the thing as well.

My Photon light will easily light up a room, and I've used it to find my way in the forest on occasion. It says on their site that it puts out 4.5 lumens, and uses CR2016 batteries. I'm fairly confident that it would be enough to use as a flashlight even if put inside a barrel. Maybe I'll test that tonight, just to see...

Back in my day in the army, the preferred method way to use black electrical tape. It did not fray around the edges and it matched the cool "black rifle" color.

I was once approached by a member of an elite UK regiment unit to make him a QD attachment for his SA80 to mount a torch. I questioned the need for the QD capability and he responded that he'd get shit from his superiors if he mounted a torch other than in the approved fashion - which, at the time, was duct tape

Maybe cover the QD mount with bits of the approved duct tape, so at 10 feet (~= 3 meters), the crucial distance for reenactors (hence the 10 foot rule), it would look like it was in fact held on with duct tape?

Tested it, and no.
Holding it in my hand, it lights up a dark room enough to see everything. Putting it in a 12ga barrel produces a very faint circle of light, maybe 15inches wide at 4 yards, and not bright enough to really identify much. Certainly not enough to find your way in a dark house, and I'm not sure I would even be able to see a person, if that person didn't move around.

I had a couple of Photon-style flashlights that I put inside ping pong balls, which I then shot out of a PVC "potato gun." For some reason, neither one stayed lit in flight. Since I shot them in the dark, and they turned themselves off when fired, I couldn't find them to figure out why they failed.
