Makes perfect sense. I myself hold no religious objections, but I always LOVED watching movies based around demons and god simply for the ruleset that they had to follow. I too feel that extra "hair raising" element. (i just happen to enjoy it)

It makes perfect sense. For me, I couldn't handle the strippers selling tickets at an NRA dinner.

You... you son of a bitch.
You forgot manipulative. I'm talking about my mother, btw, not me. And she wasn't a bitch; far from it. She could manipulate people into doing what she wanted them to do most of the time, but she did it so nicely, that even though they would know they were being manipulated, they'd still be happy about it.

That's quite common- things that involve magic and such in the story are differentiated by the richness and internal consistency of the magic system. The good ones have a consistent system, they have rules the reader can figure out and *follow* them. The better ones have rules that are subtle and/or complex enough to keep the reader interested and guessing, as well as to allow for complex interactions- some of the best ones even have emergent behavior. The bad ones are anything-goes incoherence. (This even extends to non-hard SF, where the same principle applies to the 'tech' system.)

The best parts of the movie are the ones that stay closest to the book, yes. :D

*Minor spoiler alert*

But what do you do with the ones who can catch the harpoons?

workinwifdakids wrote:I really like zombie flicks, so of course Dawn of the Dead was great (1978 and its 2004 remake). Now that the DVDs are out, I highly recommend both Season 1 and Season 2 of AMC's show The Walking Dead. I'm surprised no one's mentioned 28 Days Later, which was fabulous. And to hijack my post and this thread (which I'd like to be recognized for), watch Shaun of the Dead. British humor meets Dawn of the Dead in a hysterical take on zombie flicks.
Shaun of the Dead was great. My wife and I just watched the 2010 remake of Romero's The Crazies. Pretty good. Timothy Olyphant is a good actor. Alas, Radha Mitchell is not.

I actually bought that on DVD - and it went to Iraq :D
I was selling a certain item of very high speed ( ITAR restricted ) electro-optical pointy-shooty goodness on Ebay and got a message from a USMC Lieutenant in the sandbox who asked if I would end the auction early and let him buy it because he really needed the thing and his unit were short of them. I'm a sucker for a hard luck story, so it went to him - plus my copy of " Shaun Of The Dead " and a bottle of HP sauce for his mate who was a British Para. It's difficult to explain how valuable HP sauce is to a Brit

So, is it the Brit equivalent of Tabasco Sauce?
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

It's not hot, it's spicy. Very difficult to explain. Email me for a care package ;)
