"Cat People" both versions. The black and white was interesting because it was one of the first to use"unseen"
terror in a B horror movies. I read that they went that route because they didn't have the budget for decent and convincing special effects.
The color version generated some bad off color jokes about eating and felines.

Saw the 80's version on cable some years after it came out. I don't remember much, except that the movie was pretty bad but the girl (Nastassja Kinski) was ridiculously hot. She's still a looker now in her 50's BTW.toad wrote:"Cat People" both versions. The black and white was interesting because it was one of the first to use"unseen"

Mmmm, the SAW movies are good if you can handle uncensored gore...
The Descent was pretty fucked up.
I liked both of the Rob Zombie films... House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects.
His new one will be out in a month or two, Lords of Salem
Also, the remake of the Evil Dead looks REALLY fucking good.
Oh, and if you have never seen it, Dead Alive, just because...
Hmmm, others... Damien series... It's Alive series...
Oh, the new TV show, American Horror Story has gotten really good reviews too.

Try "Blood-Bath At The House Of Death"; one of Vincent Price's last movies. He stars as the "Sinister Man" a red-robed satanic priest with a necklace made of paper-clips. He gets no respect; when told to "piss off" by the Barmaid, he replies heatedly, "Seven hundred years of service to Lucifer and you tell me to piss off? You piss off!" There are many nods to other movies in this spoof; Jaws, Poltergeist, and even ET.

You... you son of a bitch.Netpackrat wrote:For the rest of you who are wondering what the fuck I am talking about, it was I who inflicted Yogi on this version of the forum... It is all my fault!

I enjoy some light horror. I'm self-restricted on two fronts, though: I will never watch anything demonic/satanic, nor will I watch torture for the sake of torture. Neither of these do I see as a moral failing on other's parts, I just can't and won't do it - for a few reasons, none of which are worth derailing the thread for.
Want me #1 vote straight out the gate? Vampires with James Woods. Holy GOD that movie is the very definition of a kick-ass thrill ride!
I really like zombie flicks, so of course Dawn of the Dead was great (1978 and its 2004 remake). Now that the DVDs are out, I highly recommend both Season 1 and Season 2 of AMC's show The Walking Dead. I'm surprised no one's mentioned 28 Days Later, which was fabulous. And to hijack my post and this thread (which I'd like to be recognized for), watch Shaun of the Dead. British humor meets Dawn of the Dead in a hysterical take on zombie flicks.
Cube was really, really good, and I liked Screamers as well. The latter stuck with me for a good long while. I liked (and I understand I may be in the minority) Interview with a Vampire. Final Destination was good, though the rest in the series were silly shit (IMHO). Crazies scared the shit out of me, and Flatliners was brilliant, as was The Butterfly Effect (though I'm not entirely sure you could call The Butterfly Effect traditional horror, but whatever).
So, those are on my list... so far, anyway. I may have more. Hope this helps!
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Oh forget that, workinwifdakids, I am VERY curious as to your statement of off limits materials, and would love to discuss them in a non judgemental manner. (I too hate torture porn btw)

If you liked the movie, you really, really need to read the book it was supposed to be* based on. That would be Vampire$ by John Steakley. Once you read the book you may never be able to enjoy the movie again, but it'll be worth it.workinwifdakids wrote: Want me #1 vote straight out the gate? Vampires with James Woods. *John Carpenter was originally planning on making something much closer to the book but ran into some unexpected problems with financing partway through, more or less said "what the fuck" and winged it the rest of the way. The result was at least watchable.

I remember seeing that in the theaters. The thing that got me was the harpoon and reel em into the daylight method shown at the beginning of the film - finally, Vampire hunters that use their heads!

Well, perhaps then. Again, I rarely talk about this stuff because I don't want to judge, especially since I can be such a poor example for Christ. Any time I see what you called torture porn (good turn-of-phrase, by the way - it fits perfectly), it just fills me with despair and sadness, like my heart is broken. I'm not scared at all, nor appalled, not even horrified... it's hard to explain, maybe, but it makes me feel like when I hear of a baby who was beaten to death. Just broken hearted.Yogimus wrote:Oh forget that, workinwifdakids, I am VERY curious as to your statement of off limits materials, and would love to discuss them in a non judgemental manner. If it's plot-essential, though, it doesn't seem to bother me. A good example might be the short torture/interrogation scene in Lethal Weapon where they have Gibson and Glover tied up.
Regarding movies with demonic/satanic elements, it's religious for me. The Bible, I think, is pretty specific about necromancy, mediums, sorcerers, witches, fortune tellers, and so on. I understand how duplicitous that might sound based on some of the movies I recommended, but this isn't a sense of dogmatic adherence to doctrine or Biblical obedience per se. Rather, when I watch movies where places are haunted, or people talk with the dead, or Ouija Boards, or satanic rituals, or people are possessed, it fills me with a sense of horror and impending doom that I can't deal with. And I don't mean "horror" in the sense of being scared, because that's not it. I mean I feel like something evil is sharing space with me right that second.
I believe it's what my religion calls the Holy Spirit causing me revulsion and panic, but even if that is the case it doesn't make me better than anyone else who enjoys these things, nor does it make my moral compass more true. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is just steering me away from things I can't personally handle. If you steered an alcoholic brother away from a bar, it doesn't mean you're a teetotaler, it just means your brother can't handle his liquor.
Aaaaand at this point, I think I'm talking in circles. I hope this makes sense.
