Old man's lament??

Post by toad »

I was reading some review comments about a 1962 collection of shaggy dog puns, "Through Time and Space with Ferdinand Feghoot", and one of the reviewers lamented that his sons and grandkids couldn't get the punch lines because they didn't know the literature the puns were based on. Today I have trouble with some jokes and puns because they are based on computerized games and movies that I'm unfamiliar with. Nothing last forever, but I wonder though, if there really has been a large loss in our cultral back ground due to the scholastic PC drift??

Yes. I doubt the average "went to college for a little while" middle-class individual is as educated, about meaningful, subjects as a drop-out, from the era when you couldn't drop out until 8th grade.

You know what's bad? When you make a literary reference and your *teacher* just stares dumbly at you. This was in elementary school.

I've been swearing and cursing "kids these days" since the 4th grade.

What was the reference? There are varying possible degrees of badness there...

It was a reference to Moby Dick, if I recall correctly.

That would give a whole new meaning to "Thar She Blows!"

No, the techno guy from a few years back.

Groan... My AP English class watched the movie with Gregory Peck to meet the requirement to teach Moby Dick... I had already read it, and used to routinely denounce the teacher as a heathen.
