Batman: The Animated Series

Post by Yogimus »

I remember watching these cartoons as a kid, and have discovered them again on this site: http://dubbed-scene.com/index.php?q=node%2F85

It amazes me how good this show really was, dealing with adult issues in a non-patronizing manner. Sure there were the throwaway action episodes, but surprisingly enough, they were few and far between. The stories gave more depth to the characters and their conflicts (Not the over all conflict, but the internal struggles of the antagonists) in 20 minutes than most movies do in 2 hours.

The art direction of the series is absolutely phenominal. Small touches are apparent everywhere. A crowded room where only the focal character is colored in, the almost liquid movement of the batman, as well as great camerawork.

I strongly suggest a view.

EDIT: The "Grey Ghost" (voiced by Adam West) episode is a work of art.

The intro is still, to this day, one of my absolute favorite pieces of animation.

AnimeFlavor.com and Watchcartoonsonline.com both have huge amounts of both old and new cartoons on them.

I seem to recall there was some flak directed at this cartoon back in the day, over some anti-gun elements that were present in at least one episode. IIRC, they were advocating things like rationing, to supposedly prevent gunrunning into restrictive states. I tried to do a search on it, but of course now any search on batman and guns brings up links about Aurora.

Loved the series when I was a kid. Still like it, too. The wife is a HUGE Batman fan. Thus, we've got it on DVD. The only thing that's better than the Animated Series is the series of movies that came after it. Under the Red Hood is fantastic. The series then spawned Batman Beyond, which is also phenomenal.

*Shrugs* Some of us prefer our entertainment (and especially our kids' entertainment) to be propaganda free.

And some people see propaganda where there isn't any.

Look, I get it. You guys were kids then and you liked the cartoon. There was probably similar stuff in the cartoons I watched a few years earlier, that I'd see if I went back and watched it. Of course, most of the stuff that I watched when I was a kid dated back much earlier because that's what they played on RATNet (Rural Alaska Television Network). If you lived in rural AK during that time and had a TV, there was one channel, so that's what you watched.

I am open minded, where exactly is the propaganda you refer to? I am watching the seasons right now, and I just don't see it. There is some heavy handed environmentalism in the poison ivy episodes, as well as catwoman's conservation fetish, but hardly to the level of propaganda.
