Keep it short, it's a subculture of people who enjoy anthropomorphic animal art (humanoid animals). Some engage in it more heavily than others, and some take it further than others.
If I had to compare it to something it's sorta like the Trekkies, Otakus, or Bronies, but it's not for anyone given show, but for an all encompassing for a fan of a particular art style. We have conventions, meetups, people dress up, people make art, and do art commissions. Like anyone of those other groups, not everyone dresses up, and not everyone goes to conventions, so you have varying amount of people who interact with the culture at different levels.
I really don't want to go further down this road so we'll keep it as that. It was just more as a "Just to let you know" for anyone who doesn't want to interact with someone in that community.
