Weird situation. Aren't publishers supposed to want to make money, by means of publishing things?

Publishing in small volumes is a money losing proposition. If they figure there isn't enough demand for a new print run, they won't bother. As to why they don't simply revert the rights to JR, it's simple, it doesn't MAKE THEM MONEY. No doubt that he's been offered to have the rights sold back to him, but give them back, for free? not happening.

I spent enough time in the book world to know many of the problems with the traditional publishing and distribution model.

But then there's just stupid. This is the equivalent of someone walking up to you and offering you a $20, and you turn them down because you only take $100's. There's demand. Used copies of a minor book from a minor author don't go for $500 at auction unless there's demand. Sure the market may not be huge, but anybody with half a brain should be able to find a way to milk a solid cult following.

2 almost trivially simple things you can do to make money with a small-but-solid following: (remember, there are already people out there who WANT YOUR BOOK, you just have to reach them, get the thing in their hands)

1) Sell through Amazon. Even just an Amazon-affiliate storefront. Those are trivially easy. Avoid all the bricks-n-mortar shenanigans.

2) Sell as an e-book. Low overhead, electrons are free. Can even be combined with 1), or you could work with say Baen for distribution.

These publishers are just lazy unimaginative fucks who are throwing away a chance to make money because it's not being directly delivered to them in sufficiently large crates.

Remember, if you don't have to PUSH, if you don't need to worry about marketing, or buying shelf space/dealing with chain 'buyers', or the flip side of that aka returns, then your life is much simpler. The store I worked at, there were several "publishers" we worked with that were just authors with one well-known steady-selling book who would stock it in their garage (they'd occasionally have a small print run done). Pain in the ass to deal with them, but we did. And we were a brick-n-mortar.

Demand: There's only been 60,000 copys printed over 4 printings, so it's very much a niche publication.
Price on Amazon: Just because something is for sale for 500 bucks, doesn't mean people are paying that.
The Publisher: Was never a major publishing house like Baen, Tor, etc. It was a smalltime publisher called Accurate Press. They, quite frankly may not have or can get the money to do another printing despite having the rights.
