That's one reason I've not taken the time to get my IA yet. I really, really, do not want to do annuals, particularly not in the state of Alaska. There are so many airplanes here that really only get flown during moose (or fish) season, and a lot of guys just after a signature. That, and the fact that my certificate is my livelihood, and risking it working small planes on the side is just a bad idea.MelodyByrne wrote:The idea of doing that is so foreign to my father, it's not even on the same planet. If anything went wrong after one of his inspections and a plane fell out of the sky due to something he missed, he would commit seppuku.

So buy/build a Legend Turbine, but with a 1000hp Garrett in it, instead of the Walters 650hp turbine. It may not have the sheer topend cruise that you want(it's about 350 kn), but it climbs like a bat-out-of-hell solo(7000 fpm plus), and you could operate from a 3000 ft strip.

EDIT: Why limit the "family hauler" to a single-engine plane? Lots of great twins out there. One of the most under-rated and best bang-for-buck is the MU-2.
And yeah, I know about its safety record, but that's due to improperly trained pilots, not the plane. It needs to be flown like a light jet, not a standard twin. It's why Mitsubishi tried for years to get a type rating requirement on it, even though MGW is under 12,500 lbs. Now it has basically the equivalent of a type rating with the SFAR, and the accident rate has dropped to nil.

Or if you've got a small enough body, pick one of the 44 Scooters that Israel put on the sale block.

OCD Aspies are fun (and scary) when they play "what if". I have one friend who's a technical editor who lives in a condo... but you'd better have a few days handy when you ask her about her house design. Been working on it for YEARS, down to the most impossibly exacting detail.arctictom wrote:You guys got way into this, which brings up the studys on lottery winners, large percentage of folks end up right back where they started.

No, doesn't surprise me a bit.

There would have to be a spot on the gun room wall for a set of representative JMB handgun designs -- near the entrance to the underground firing range.

Now, after I get done setting up the Noble Cause Charitable Organization (NCCO), here's what I do:
1. Buy an appropriate piece of land, set up a modern range. Not only for my personal use, but as a metric-distance training center for Olympic and MLAIC disciplines. Sizing would be adqeuate for a World Muzzle-Loading Championships (25 positions at 25, 50, and 100 meters, plus 4 Rapid Fire bays). Maybe go with electronic scoring.
2. Set up a club to handle range operations & maintenance. The NCCO and its officers (that's me) retain ownership and full rights of access.
3. Build an official residence for the NCCO's President (that's me) close to the NCCO's range. To maintain oversight of our capital asset.
4. Indulge myself with a new car, maybe an airplane. Not sure what car to buy, but it's definitely a convertible. Porsche, most likely. The airplane is probably an Extra 300, with a Pitts as an added possibility. Make sure the range has a suitable long-range facility (aka grass runway).
