Having been self-employed most of my working life, I can't imagine 9-5.

60 hour weeks were the norm; 80 hour weeks were not unusual.

Was it worth it? Every G-d damn minute. It was hard, but I was free. And I reaped the rewards, such as they were.

I wouldn't have done it any other way.

I work in aviation, and before that, freight. 9-5? Surely, you jest.

I'm supposed to be 8 to 5, but I'm going to bed, to get up in three hours, because my hospital has an opening for a qualified network engineer, but hasn't realized they need to post it. Morons keep reloading software on the data center network switches...

Anyhow, right now being salaried for me is not fun. My team is down 3 people, and our budget is frozen. Ugh. We work what we have to. Life is taking a beating.

Self employed here and therefore no set schedule. Work as needed to pay bills as generated. Early hours, late hours and weekends are all fair game. I tend to go in cycles on projects and work accordingly to get them done on time. I've also been known to take a nap in my own shop when I damn well felt like it. Pros and cons to everything - I don't get paid time off and no sick leave.
One secret to life. Step #1 - Find something you enjoy doing. Step #2 - Find someone foolish enough to pay you to do it.

23:30 to 08:00 Central here. Prior to this shift, it was 08:30 to 17:00 on Thursday & Friday, then 19:00 to 07:00 Saturday & Sunday. That schedule was... unpleasant.

My last two jobs have been 8-5, in theory. The last job was closer to 7:30-6 during slow times.

I started a new job last week. It's a telecommuting job and expected office hours have never been discussed. I'm aiming for 8ish to 5ish, depending on what comes up.

Say what? They had you doing that kind of switching as a regular gig? That's crazy.

I've done shiftwork and as part of filling in for people out sick or on vacation or whatever, I've switched back from days to nights such that I was only out of the office for exactly 24 hours. For anyone who hasn't done it- working night shifts is bad enough, but frequent and rapid shifts back and forth from day shifts to night shifts will eat you up. It's not something your body is meant to do. It's brutal. Burns out young people and makes than old, and makes old people sick.

I've done 9 to 5, and 11 to 7 (liked 11 to 7 more) and it was hourly so if I got called to do extra it was overtime. It was nice, steady, not too taxing but didn't really pay much. Then I started working in IT and things got... different.
