Perhaps to make up for the resource hog of the next Office compilation??bubblewhip wrote:We weren't totally big about the start button being totally replaced with a full screen interface but the good news is that Windows 8 uses less resources than Windows 7, so the system requirements will actually be LESS than Windows 7. Most importantly Windows 8 uses 40% less memory than windows 7.

Re: Windows 8
I am now running full versions of 8 on both my gaming desktop and my laptop... Both installed perfectly (upgraded from 7) and without and driver or program issues.
The ONLY problem is that if you have a gmail account, you have to enable 2-factor authentication and use a special google program code to get the email addresses setup in Windows. After setup, you only have to use 2-factor authentication to check your gmail from a website. This is not a Windows problem, it is a Google issue but it will likely cause people some aggravation.

Re: Windows 8
I read about it on Yahoo (I know, not the BEST source), and the operation seemed to be.....difficult. I decided I'll stick with Windows 7 even though I probably will have to get a new computer in the next year or so and suffer through 8. Or will 7 be available a year from now?

Of course you're right Chris.
Still,
a) I haven't been able give my money to Apple. I'm too close to the inside baseball and how they treat their suppliers. Their arrogance and abuse of power is odious to me.
b) Google is increasingly becoming the evil it encourages all of us not to be, and I find Android to be exquisitely unsatisifying and generally just /meh/.
So I keep looking and hoping just one more cute, available girl will show up to the dance and not turn out to be another Lindsey Lohan.

Thing is, I dont use the metro UI... I boot, click desktop and off I go.
The functions I used to use my start menu for I can still do in the exact same way (Windows key + R) to run programs or (Windows key and start typing then press enter) to launch a program.

Now that this thread has been necro'd....mekender wrote:Just a tip for those of you that care... A Technet subscription is only $200 a year and you get the full versions of almost all of the MS software with that. They remain good after the subscription expires too. Just Office + Windows will run you more usually.
FYI- MS changed the terms of the agreement for TechNet again this past summer. Now if you let your subscription expire, your licenses are supposed to expire too. As in, you expire -> you're no longer licensed to use any of the software from your subscription. It remains to be seen if that will be actively enforced in any way, but we'll start finding out a year from when they changed the terms.

Re: Windows 8
Oh, and this should let people know what I think of Windows 8- I just recently bought a Windows 7 upgrade license (to upgrade my XP license). My Windows VM is now 7, not XP.
Got my laptop re-imaged from Vista to 7 recently. I could deal with Vista. I find I enjoy 7. So I switched at home, too. Might as well, XP is EOL. I have fully licensed copies of Office 2003 and 2010 to go along (every time I see an offer for the $10 Office@home thing through my employer, it's a no-brainer).

Re: Windows 8
My enthusiasm for Apple began in the early 80's and ended in the early 90's. Nothing I've heard since has done anything to encourage a revival of said enthusiasm. Actually, now they can DIAF.blackeagle603 wrote:Of course you're right Chris.

Evil or no, I trust any given company as far as their intelligent self-interest aligns with not screwing me. And in Googles case it aligns pretty well. They want to show me adds. In order to do so they have to prevent anyone from imprisoning me, virtually speaking. So long as their interests align with them making efforts to preserve my freedom, I'm on board.b) Google is increasingly becoming the evil it encourages all of us not to be, and I find Android to be exquisitely unsatisifying and generally just /meh/.
It doesn't work like that.So I keep looking and hoping just one more cute, available girl will show up to the dance and not turn out to be another Lindsey Lohan.
