Re: New Discovery Chanel Show: Militia Rising
I'm sure I have seen at least half of those guys before - dressed in dungarees chasing college students through the woods with chainsaws in documentaries such as " Wrong Turn 2 "

All my life I been in the dog house
I guess that just where I belong
That just the way the dice roll
Do my dog house song
I guess that just where I belong
That just the way the dice roll
Do my dog house song

Stockpiles of MRE-s and water are brought to evac shelters by members of the group. They also organize people's contributions to best serve the situation at hand. (I mean voluntary consolidation)Netpackrat wrote:Please define "consolidating and distributing supplies."Yogimus wrote:Don't get me wrong, the idiots on TV ARE yokels. The real militia are the guys who, at a time of need, organize a neighborhood watch (a real one) establish shelters and start consolidating and distributing supplies. See: Minot's militia (whatever the hell they called themselves) as well as San Antonio's militia in regards to hurricane Katrina.

I honestly saw no menace there, that it was a reference to voluntary resource pooling, both from outside acquisition and internal donations.Netpackrat wrote:Thank you. That helps a lot with threat assessment.Yogimus wrote:(I mean voluntary consolidation)
Which means it's time for a The Last Centurion reference. Bottom-up community self-organization is enormously powerful, and yet many can't comprehend it. Those that can't tend to be undesirable, either evil or parasites, or both.

minor :jacked:
side note: from consolidating supplies to subject of laying in food supplies
It didn't register with me till this weekend that there's a canning jar lid vacuum sealer attachment that I can seal dry mix and grains in traditional Ball jars. Suh-wheet. Color me clueless.
Since watching FatheadTheMovie and subsequently reading "Wheatbelly," I've been wheat free (actually gone completely grain free) since late July. It's almost paleo but I include dairy.
Aside from some dramatic health improvements and body composition/weight loss, this changed my outlook/and shopping list quite a bit. Now the grain base is being replaced with Almonds, almond flour, coconut flour, unsweetened coconut flakes, jars of almond butter, coconut oil etc. Need to experiment with powdered eggs as a binder in the grainfree baked good recipes I've been trying.
Honeyville is getting more and more business from me and managing some of the bulky bags in the pantry/kitchen has been less than optimal. So that got me looking for meal/baking size portion options for longer term dry/vacuum storage.Voila! Who knew.

Re: New Discovery Chanel Show: Militia Rising
Given the number of people already in positions of authority, who feel entitled to the resources of others, I think it's totally reasonable to be suspicious of any who would appoint themselves the arbiters of resource allocation during times of trouble. And I think that to assume that there would not be a movement, favoring confiscation of resources from those who planned ahead, somewhat naive.Greg wrote:I honestly saw no menace there, that it was a reference to voluntary resource pooling, both from outside acquisition and internal donations.

The Food Saver attachment started a thought chain:
1. Put a Vac gauge on the Food Saver here at home, out of curiosity.
2.The Food Saver is a noisy little barstid with a lot of plastic parts.
3. I have two pressure canners that will hold several quart jars each, and I have a 2-stage
A/C vacuum pump--hmmmmn, I wonder....

Here's something to consider - an aspirator. They're available as both pnuematic(HF sells them for one), and "water"(this version is commonly seen on lab faucets).
The water ones are especially useful as all they require is water presssure to work. The downside is they don't usually come with standard faucet threads, and they're fairly long.

HTRN, I would tell you that you are an evil fucker, but you probably get that a lot ~ Netpackrat

hmmm, that's got me looking at my All-American in a new light. It can process 7 qts at a time.1. Put a Vac gauge on the Food Saver here at home, out of curiosity.

What woulb the relative merits/demerits of dry canning that way or in an oven as Malthorn showed.
