Nuke it all and reinstall.

It can be very difficult to remove all vestiges of a really massive or vicious infection. It is sometimes better, and often faster to format the drive and reinstall your operating system.

Even better is to have a restore system setup so you can format and recover your operating system and basic software set.

And I think your ideas on treatment of virus writers is too kind by far.

Big +1 on MalwareBytes. I ran their free version for a long time, then wound up buying the pro version. Works well, and gives real time protection.

They may no longer be free, or may be obsolete :|

Good luck.
ComboFix, perhaps?

Yep, that's it. Virus came from me stupidly using IE to view a web page that wouldn't format properly in Firefox.

Page was hosted by some free webspace provider ( *ahem* Tripod *ahem* ) - drive by download, virus.

I reckon I used to be in one of the highest risk browsing groups. Not pRon surfers ( I've seen enough of that stuff to last me a lifetime thanks ) but folks who enjoy reading about crazy peoples attempts to make pulsejets, rocket go-carts and improvised semi-military technology in their garages. Real " Hey, hold my beer and watch this " projects.
They tended to be hosted on the free webspace providers, the free webspace providers didn't give a shit who they rented banner space to as long as they got paid...

I NEVER use IE anymore. It's just asking for trouble. Adblock and NoScript are essentials IMO

Third party ad resellers, like Google Ads and Project Wonderful, have made this kind of attack a major headache, even from supposedly "clean" sites - One of the worst times I got hit was from Fanfiction.net.

The IT guy where my wife works had the same problem as we do, so he set up a thumb drive with anti-virus software and gave directions for a fix.

Now to look online for a horse whip, just in case I ever meet a virus-writer.

You lost YOUR concentration, I've now read everything on the web about Turbonique and I've decided to re-implement my redneck chemist method of making concentrated H2O2 :)

Buy your H2O2 supplies while you can. It will soon be restricted as an explosives precursor, along with acetone and a number of other useful chemicals which I probably have in the garage.
