I'm looking for a really rugged looking industrial-style rotating light, from a movie trope. It's the kind of amber light you see rotating every 2 seconds in every bad 80s action movie. These movies show it on the ceiling underground as the giant mammoth blastproof doors close at Cheyenne Mountain (or wherever the good guys / bad guys have a secure underground lair with 10-feet-thick walls). The uglier and more industrial the better, especially with a housing so I can bust out the Krylon and paint it hazard yellow. The thick ugly mesh metal housing around the bulb assembly is necessary, though I can buy it later or my brother can weld up something for me. I really don't want a police-style light, or something that looks commercial. It's the heavy .mil/industrial steel box-like look I'm going for.
Anyone know where I can get such a thing?

We stole one off a police car back in the late 80's , but that was blue, obviously.
24 volt as well, had to get a mate to make up a 240/24 transformer to run it.
Had many happy hours listening to psychedelic rock under the influence of various chemicals, with that providing the only illumination.
3 of us ended up in mental institutions though

Yeah, I'm designing my man cave. I'm thinking of one of those big bomb shelter strobes going to illuminated encased switches like this:Aegis wrote:Just 'cause?

I'd wire it so it would turn on and off with the operation of the garage door, and then a switch where it would be in the open-on or full-off position. The rest of the garage will take on the feel of a sort of abandoned missile silo. I'll put in some ammo can speakers:

And some of that black and yellow diagonal striped paint at waist level around the inside. I'll paint the inside doors (both - leading to inside, and leading to side yard) to make it look like it's going somewhere else (e.g., "restricted access" signage). Some diamond kick plates on the doors.
Anyway, those are my ideas so far!

What about getting a newer-type rotating beacon and changing the shell and putting a heavy wire or metal cage around it?

You need to find a "Use of Deadly Force Authorized" restricted area sign.workinwifdakids wrote: The rest of the garage will take on the feel of a sort of abandoned missile silo.
I always wanted to edit the ones at our facilities to read "Use of Deadly Force Mandatory", but never got the CO to sign off on it.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

What you're looking for is an explosion-proof rotating beacon.
Most of the applications for these have switched from rotating beacons to strobes. Less maintenance of moving parts. They still are available but are NOT cheap unless you can find it at an industrial salvage seller. The old school incandescent styles are being phased out for LEDs.

Here's some Federal Signal ones on eBay:

A quick look also showed some Edwards and Cooper lamps.
These were many thousands of dollars new!

Somewhere I had an old Lab sign about "Metal Halides and Chlorides."

Yes, Darrell, thanks! That offers a wide variety of price points. I want to spend less than $100; they had some in the $300 range there, but I saw some for $75.
