Gun Buyers At Gun Turn In

Post by Darrell »

LOL Some enterprising guys offer better money to people turning in firearms at a gun buyback program:
Gun-buying enthusiasts crash firearms 'turn-in' event at Memorial Coliseum
By Allan Brettman, The Oregonian
Darren Campbell, 47, of Salem (right) inspects a gun Saturday from a potential seller in a Memorial Coliseum parking lot. Campbell declined to purchase this firearm. Earlier, he bought a rifle for $100 that could be resold for triple that amount because of its collectible value, he said.
David West behaved as a cattle buyer might when a prized bull entered the auction ring.

"One-hundred fifty for the revolver sir!" West shouted. "It's not too late!"

Alas, it was too late because the man with the pearl-handled revolver proceeded to turn over the firearm Saturday afternoon in exchange for a $75 Fred Meyer gift card. He chose that route rather than sell the gun for more money to West or any of a half-dozen men standing on a sidewalk between North Broadway Street and a parking lot north of Memorial

They were among a group of gun buyers who'd staked out periphery positions as a firearms "turn-in" took place inside the parking lot. The Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation conducted the turn-in for four hours. Gun owners could turn in a weapon to foundation volunteers, who were assisted by Portland police with handling the weapons for eventual destruction. In return for each operable gun, owners received the gift card.

Interesting comments, too. Found via Fark.com.

I wonder why that guy didn't take the $150 for the pearl handeled revolver? He probably wanted to be a "good citizen." then again, he may not have believed the private sale was actually legal. Sad, either way, since it will now be destroyed. There are victims and there are volunteers...

If the grips were real mother-of-pearl, I'd have offered him $75 just for them, and he could have still got his $75 from the gun turn-in.

Plus, some people are just so completely ignorant of what is and isn't legal, regarding firearm ownership, purchases, etc. I had one EX-girlfriend (largely ex for this and other similar reasons) who seemed open minded on the subject of guns. We were sitting in my truck, in her driveway, and I opened the glove box and pulled out my Nagant revolver to show her. She freaked out and said, "Is this even LEGAL???" I informed her that it certainly was. She "wanted" to believe me, but just couldn't see how we weren't breaking the law. I ended the relationship soon after. Same planet, two different realities.
