Police say an armed robber got more than he bargained for Friday night when he targeted the wrong victim.
Just after 10 p.m. a 36-year-old man was confronted by a robber with a shotgun in the parking lot of the Walgreens located in the 3600 block of College. The man said the robber held the shotgun to his head and demanded money.
The man, a concealed handgun license holder, was able to get his handgun and fired one shot at the would-be robber. The robber dropped his shotgun and took off running fleeing south behind the store. The intended victim was not injured during this confrontation and he did not lose any property.
Patrol Officers set up a perimeter and with the assistance of our K-9 Unit began to search for the robber. An officer saw a man hiding behind a business near the area of Interstate 10 and Corley. The man matched the description of the robber. Police say the man also had a gunshot wound to his hip.
The original victim positively identified this man as the robber....
Good friend got into a gun fight.
He prepared.
He trained.
He acted prudently.
He's alive.
Perp is wounded and in jail.
Cliff notes:
Truck in the next parking space
Perp jumps out, throws down on him with a shotgun
Friend is seated with one foot inside his Jeep Cherokee
Keeps talking to perp and pushing shotgun barrel sideways
Says he's getting his wallet.
Pulls his Taurus 709 Slim from kidney carry
Fires once
Perps falls backwards, drops shotgun, jumps up and runs.
K9 finds the perp shot through the hip and hiding.
My friend goes home alive to his wife and kids.
I just love a happy ending, don't you?

...the scenario reminds me of the briefcase scene from collateral (YouTube link). It's a close-quarters double engagement from the hands up position, with a firearm pointed at the defender.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Why wouldn't you carry like that already (ready to fire after taking the safety off or pulling the first round double-action)? Having to rack the slide places you at a HUGE disadvantage should you need to shoot RIGHT NOW.

Well, I had an APD officer tell me I should never keep a round in the chamber, "for safety reasons." Course, this was the same guy who couldn't figure out how to unload the simplest pistol there is (P3AT).

NO LEO agency I've personally been involved with down here in SoCal would EVER SUGGEST they should do something like that. Telling people to do that indicates a lack of training, familiarity with the firearm, and/or buying poorly designed or made guns.
That's as bad as a guy who still tells people they should only put 5 rounds in their revolvers and keep an empty cylinder under the hammer, like the old single-action revolvers in case you dropped the gun and it landed on the hammer, 'causing it to go off. Newer revolvers don't have that problem and not fully loading it is selling yourself short that one round which might make the difference between life & death.
