LA MESA — A 17-year-old La Mesa girl was hospitalized Monday after accidentally being shot by her 12-year-old brother while the two were home alone.
The girl was lying on the couch watching television at the house on Jefferson Avenue near Jackson Drive about 9:45 a.m. when she was wounded, La Mesa police Lt. Matt Nicholass said.
Police got a 911 call from the boy stating that he had accidentally shot his sister, Nicholass said.
The boy had gone into his parents’ bedroom and retrieved the AR-15 style rifle. He brought it into the living area and began manipulating the gun when it accidentally discharged, Nicholass said.
The boy was in the dining room about 12 feet from his sister when the rifle went off. The bullet hit her in the left shoulder, just inches from her head, Nicholass said.
She was conscious and talking when medics arrived. The injury is not life-threatening, Nicholass said.
Officers questioned the boy and his father at police headquarters. Police were investigating whether the gun was secured or locked, or if it was legally owned.
It is possible that criminal charges could be brought against the parents as it is a crime to leave an unsecured gun readily available to a child in a manner that it can be fired, Nicholass said.

Boy, 12, accidentally shoots teenage sister
This is what can happen when there's a lack of knowledge, education, and training. When it comes to firearms, ignorance can be absolutely DEADLY (being so close and probably ball ammo, the round most likely just zipped right through):
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.
I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

I really despise stupid fuckwit gun owners.
You have kids, TEACH them about guns. Or if you are too stupid to do that, lock them up. Kids are naturally curious and will fuck with anything you don't explicitly tell them not to fuck with. One of my exes had 3 boys that were into Airsoft and paintball. I took them shooting (real guns) a few times. I shut down the first range trip quick and fast and packed up the car after one of them pawed a gat (unloaded) while people were down-range after I repeatedly warned him. His brothers rode him so hard that subsequent range trips were sans violations.
Yeah, I know my sermon is going out to the Sunday singers....

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

Aw, but if they learned to write it correctly, their editors wouldn't like it 'cause it doesn't fit their political beliefs regarding guns attacking people.randy wrote:FIF them308Mike wrote:

I hope his sister never lets him live it down, NOR THEIR PARENTS! I would like to have them sentenced to MANDATORY ATTENDANCE at one of our NRA Family Shooting Sports Camps, where the rules are drilled into them and demonstrated that firearms ARE NOT TOYS to be played with - NO MATTER WHAT CRAP YOUR FRIENDS MIGHT BE SPOUTING.
If it's a loving and tight family, I'm sure the boy is going to be feeling plenty guilty already and DAMNED SORRY about what he did. I just hope they don't believe the media hype about how the gun "JUST WENT OFF" - NO, HE PULLED THE TRIGGER!!
