Bipod for an AR

Bipod for an AR

Post by rightisright »

I just picked up an RRA lower w. DPMS bull barrel upper w. RRA free float handguards. It's a heavy sucker!

I want to set it up like a DM rifle so I can practice out to 300 yards. I just purchased a Burris cantilever mount and already have a Sightron SII Big Sky 3-9 I'm going to put on it (maybe something a little more "tactical" (I hate even typing that word!) down the road). One cool thing about the Burris mount is it comes w. two Pic. rails on top of the rings so I can mount a very small (like the Docter or Fast Fire) dot sight.

My preliminary research shows that Harris makes pretty decent bipods. Since I have never had a rifle w. a bipod, I really don't know what height to buy. I'll be shooting off the bench and prone. It looks like 6"-9" should be fine for my application. Any thoughts?

P.S. I've dry fired it a bunch of times and there is only one thing I don't like so far: the winter trigger guard cuts into my "Bronx Salute" finger because it sticks down so far. I imagine it will be worse under recoil, so I just ordered a Magpul trigger guard. I'll keep the winter one in case I ever have to invade Canada.

Harris makes good tripods, or so I've heard. I'd think you'd want to factor in the length of magazine you intend to use to achieve clearance with the bipod.

You can spend stupid amounts of money on bipods - there's Parker Hale and Atlas, Long Range Accuracy, and RND.. I think the cheapest is around 200, with the RND topping 700 bucks. Sinclair carries a bunch of bipods too, some as high as 250..

My setup in Iraq was a Harris Bipod with a Larue QD mount. Worked well, and still does.

Your height estimate is good. I got the Harris 6"-9", and mounted it as far forward as my rail would go using a YHM Bipod Adapter, which goes for about $30. I do not have any involvement in or relationship with the linked vendor (RifleGear); I just love their company.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

GG&G makes some very nice bipods as well. I'd recommend the 9-13 inch bipod. I found that when shooting from the prone, the lowest setting on the Harris worked well, and as the bipod sank into the grass and dirt, I was just able to move it up.

Good idea, Jag. I forgot about them, but GG&G's stuff 'feels' sturdy and no-nonsense, like you're holding a block of granite. I have two sling mounts and a quick detach lever on my EOTech from them, and would buy any product from them without hesitation.

I bought the Harris 6"-9" last night.

I also realized I bought the Burris 30mm cantilever mount and the scope I want to put on (Sightron II Big Sky 3-9x42) is 1". Doh! I could have sworn it was 30mm!!!

That's ok. I'll buy another scope for the AR and put the Sightron on a Winny 70 I'm working on.

You can get adapters to put a 1" scope in 30mm rings.

I thought of that. But I think the Sightron is a better match on the 30.06 boltie (where it did abide briefly in the past).
