Google Fiber

Post by Darrell »

This is the first I've heard of it, Google is promising 1 GB/sec download speeds. I wonder how it will work?

No Fox Sports channels. Not good for me.

I didn't think you were in Kansas City.

Google Fiber just opened in one test market. It's a proof-of-concept that Google will use (one way or another) to bludgeon cable companies and wired ISP's into being less horribly dickish.

It's all part of a very wide-ranging effort (hint: Android is a part of it) on Google's part to loosen or remove obstacles that get between Google's content (and ads) and viewer's eyeballs.

Something some of you may not know. After the tech bubble burst in 2000, Google went on a buying spree buying up "dark"(unused) fiber at firesale prices. They're now one of the big players in the backbone market. They've been building data centers at a tremendous pace(fun fact, one of the things Google looked for when looking for a good location was aluminum smelters, because the smelters are always near where electricity is cheap). So it seems they finally worked their way down to the "last mile" segment of the market..

I will say that you can fully expect them to use every piece of data they will collect on you to turn around and sell it to whoever wants it.

Thank you. I thought my wife was the only one getting those emails.

I'm not in KC, but lack of my regional sports channels would kill the deal for me. I prefer to be at games live but when I can't make it to a game TV is still pretty good.

Verizon just rolled out their new "Quantum" version of FiOS. Of course, there was a price hike involved.. What was interesting, was that the 15/5, has remained unchanged, they now offer speeds upwards of 300mbit. What gets me, is the way the pricing structure is setup, it makes sense to get into the 150up/35down, which is ridiculous - even a house full of gamers playing WOWcrack all the time wouldn't come close to stressing that connection. The only thing that can, is multiple vid buffering from the likes of Netflix/Hulu/Crackle/Youtube/etc at the same time. And even then you're talking like 4,5 or more at the same time.

What I would like to see is somebody offering decent speed, at low prices. Somebody offering a max of say, 20d/10u for say, 30 bucks a month, would probably make good money.
