So I have this small generalization that every industry has a "Ferrari of" something. And I don't necessarily mean that in a good way. What I mean by "The Ferrari of" is that a manufacture that produces something of very high quality that also has it's own (rabid) fan base, but arguments thrown against them that competitors can do the same or greater for half the cost.
Like Ferrari, the status and name isn't without historical merit either, the company in question has done some legitimately industry changing things, but also is credited for innovations that they are not responsible for.
H&K is the Ferrari of tactical guns
- Like Ferrari, they are ungodly expensive compared to relative
- Other guns like the Sig516 preform the same or better for half the price
- Have their dedicated rabid fanbase
- "Because you suck and we hate you"
- Is credited for being innovative in areas that are actually very old (Piston AR-15)
Some others on my list.
Apple is the Ferrari of computers
Kimber is the Ferrari of 1911s
Chris Reeve is the Ferrari of knives
Alienware (Used to be) the Ferrari of gaming computers
Swavorski is the Ferrari of binoculars
Leica is the Ferrari of cameras
Schmidt & Bender is the Ferrari of rifle scopes
I'm sure I can list other manufactures, but I was wondering if any of you guys have similar feelings about another company. This is purely a matter of personal opinion as well, so try not to get offended if something you have is on this list.
To have some other fun I can list a "Corvette of" (not sure if that's the right name to use, since it has other douchebaggery connotations.) for manufactures that represent high value for what your paying.
Dell is the Corvette of computers
Vortex is the Corvette of optics
Taurus is the Corvette of 1911's (This is probably the most accurate)

Surefire is the Ferrari of flashlights, only much, much more reliable than a Ferrari...

Meh.
Saying something is the "Ferrari of-" something immediately puts me in mind that it may be nice to look at and generally makes all the right noises but it will eat you alive with repair bills and start failing reliability tests very quickly.

That's not limited to Ferraris. Basically all European sportscars are $$$ and time intensive for maintenance. Porsches tend to be the exception(although their still more money to maintain than say, a 'vette).evan price wrote:Saying something is the "Ferrari of-" something immediately puts me in mind that it may be nice to look at and generally makes all the right noises but it will eat you alive with repair bills and start failing reliability tests very quickly.
I always thought that "Ferrari of (blank)" meant a company so arrogant, that their biggest competitor was started by a former customer
