Halloween movie

Post by Rod »

While I sit and wait for the crumbsnatchers and the illegals to come to the door for their "government handout training" (aka Trick or Treat), I decided to view one of my Netflix choices. Them, the 1950s movie about giant ants. Interesting to note, it takes place in New Mexico, Otero County to be exact. James Whitmore is the heroic sergeant of the New Mexico State Police, with proper uniform, auto, and badge. Otero County is just north of El Paso. The FBI sent an agent (James Arness) from Alamogordo (actually should be El Paso field office), and the scientists fly in on a transport version of the B-25 and land at what I assume would be Holliman AFB in Alamogordo. Interesting to see Joshua Trees in the New Mexico desert. ;)

Wife likes to see the young ones in their costumes, and I like scaring the shit out of them with the dog. She barks like crazy then sits and shakes with me while I hand the candy out to the kids who've wet their pants.

I would get a bunch of grubbing 13 year olds, half of whom aren't even in costume, ringing the doorbell every 15 damn minutes starting promptly at 3pm and not stopping well after dark.

Considering I have to run up and down a flight of stairs, this gets old, oh, about 3:15..

So I disconnect the doorbell.

Yeah, Halloween got out of hand. A few years back, we canceled giving away ice cream to kids due to the problems w. teenage punks -- don't they have halloween dances/parties, etc to go through?

That is so sad. Lot's of people have issues with the whole trick or treat thing, but I love it. It's one of the most fun holidays of the year. Its getting more lame each year as people let this funtastic slice of Americana die.

Those who would argue the Americana thing; we do it unlike anyone else I have heard about. I will accept it if I am wrong, though I tend to doubt it. Maybe Canadians do it like we do, but I have no idea.
If you are unwilling to give another man freedom in his life, do not expect to have it in your own.
It surely beats trying to figure out what the metrosexuals want ( a good hard kick in the nuts in my opinion, but that won't sell ice cream :D )- Highspeed

Actually, we do it pretty much the same in Ireland (since we invented it), 'cept for bonfires, more kids and fireworks. Dublin skyline looks like Baghdad at night during GWI/II.

There's something more "magical", visceral about it in Ireland, too. One of my favourite festivals.

A lot of people here moan about trick or treating, saying it's a recent US import and the end of the world as we know it, but it's not really.
When I was a kid in the 70's we called it 'Mischief Night' and would play benign pranks on people. My dad was doing the same thing when he was a kid in the 1930's for heavens sake.

We do get spared the worst excesses of juvenile behaviour because my missis works at the local school and the kids really like her. But even so I just think let 'em have a bit of fun, as long as it doesn't go too far.

My mates kid collected a huge amount of sweets, which I can understand because he's a cheeky little swine, but amusing and respectful with it - he knows where the line is and not to cross it. He later came to the Halloween party at the pub, with his mum, and was handing out chocolate bars from his stash to the adults :D
All my life I been in the dog house
I guess that just where I belong
That just the way the dice roll

I agree, it's definitely much cooler, more interesting... more "special" in Ireland.
It's funny, but it's the one night of the year back home where I can understand why the ancients believed it to be a day when this world and "the other world" converged.

And I say that as a non-believer.

Well, what kind of ICE CREAM were you giving away? Stuff that was already starting to melt and by the time they made it home and discovered what it was, it was nothing but a milk-type soup, or had already been dripping onto all their other candies already (thank to the holes already poked into the ice-cream bags).

If that's the case, why not just give them gobs of shaving cream and send them on their way?
