Annular Solar Eclipse-May 20 2012

Post by Darrell »

Here's a website with good details of Sunday's solar eclipse. Pick your state for detailed info and graphic representations of what can be seen.

It will occur before/during sunset, and be visible mostly from west of the Missippippi. I'd thought of driving down to Albuquerque to watch from the centerline, but decided against it. I did see a similar eclipse from near El Paso, TX in May 1994. It was very cool.

The eclipse turned out pretty good from here in the Springs--it clouded up this afternoon, but then cleared somewhat. I put a solar filter on the 5" Mak scope on a camera tripod, since I'd need to move the scope to dodge trees, neighboring houses and such. I wound up out by the street, and several passersby got to take a look. Did have to fight some clouds that came and went, then the sun/moon pair set behind a big cloud just before maximum eclipse. Several sunspot groups were visible on the face of the sun until the moon covered them up. Pretty cool. :geek:

We stood on the porch, and not having any fancy equipment, held up some binoculars and projected the light on a piece of paper. Not a particularly good view, but my wife's younger brothers were able to see it without blinding themselves, so it's all good.
