Gads, I'm turning into a little old lady.

Post by toad »

It started innocently enough. I gave up waiting for my waist size to decrease and purchased some pants that fit. I figured with the way clothing prices are increasing if I didn't get them now I might end up pant-less in the future. Unfortunately I ended up with two pairs of the pants that were too long. Just rolling them up didn't look so hot. I didn't feel like trying to find a tailor and paying to get them hemmed, so I got on the net for do it your self info.....they had these things called sewing machines that they used a lot...I got to thinking about the clothing that I've tossed that I probably could have saved but I got too aggravated to hand sew, so I looked on my local Craig's list for a cheap sewing machine.....Uhm " works great has been sitting in my garage since 1969(comes with free spiders).....has a bazillion stich patterns and is a bargain at $xxxx.xx....excellent condition, needs a foot pedal and a power cord. Works great as long as you put a rubber band here and some bailing wire there." Then I start reading the reviews for a cheap one. Then I got cold feet and went out an bought some Singer Fusion Tape. You use a steam iron to stick cloth together with it. I was doing some measuring on the pants prior to using the stuff and figured I needed to rip the seam on the hem that was already there to avoid getting the pants too short if I used the tape. I didn't have anything that was good for ripping seams though, and then I got to thinking about the bad luck I've had with iron patches......Then I remembered that the little Brother LS-2125i came with accessories that included a seam ripper...So some how I just ordered a ten stitch sewing machine for an in store delivery at Wally World for 64.95 including tax to save going out and buying a $3 seam ripper or paying someone to hem the fargging pants....Kindney's!

I have a really hard time finding pants that are short enough. Hand hemming is a real pain in the hands. I remember how much my mother hated hemming my fathers pants on her Singer sewing machine in the late 70s/early 80s. My solution for anything that don't need to look top notch is to use 6 - 8 brass safety pins.

Better watch out Toad, or pretty soon you'll be wearing a pink apron. ;)

That said, the older Singers are built like tanks, and can generally be had for a coupla bennys and will last forever. Check Craigslist.

The pattern stiching stuff is pretty impressive, and has gotten cheap - Greg Dean got his wife a computer controlled one for a birthday gift for something like 370 bucks.

And our very own Eyvl Robot has waxed nostalgic over his industrial machine he uses for holsters.

Well the good news is that I won 2nd place in the apartment complex early payment lottery so I get $50 off of June's rent so I'm only $14.95 over planned expenditure.
The bad news is I can't find the pattern for the "Angry Bird" grenade covers.

Apparently this thing can do denim, canvas, and thin light leather with right size needle. I'm thinking about a low visibility pink nylon case for the AK-47 under folder.
I figure I'm OK as long as I don't start collecting Maxfield Parish stuff.

As long as it's embroidered properly an apron in any color is okay. (Possibly NSFW for those of you who work where swearing isn't an art form.)

OH man I wish you hadn't posted that. My first thought was an image of a hot chick wearing nothing but an apron and that's a win. Then I flashed on my self wearing nothing but an apron.....EPIC FAIL....almost brought on a mad dash for the porcelain telephone.

I may have that same power. Wonder if we're brothers?
