I was REALLY looking forward to Cabela's opening in NJ, but that now seems unlikely.
There's a Dick's sporting goods nearby, I've gotten some good deals on fishing stuff there. Prices seems comparable to Cabela's, and I can actually handle the stuff before I buy unlike when I buy online. I've been to the Cabela's in CT, nice store but a bit of a trip if you're just looking for some softbaits or fishing line.

Yeah. I could go on my lunch break.MarkD wrote:I was REALLY looking forward to Cabela's opening in NJ, but that now seems unlikely.
The one Dick's I've been to seems mostly like the usual urban "sporting goods store", which actually means "clothes to wear while hitting on the hottie at the gym, plus a couple of tennis racquets and hockey sticks- store". They had some outdoorsy stuff, but not much. They really can't compete with the real sporting goods stores NJ has, from the days where it was a gateway to the Catskills- like Ramsey Outdoor and Campmor. There's a Dick's sporting goods nearby, I've gotten some good deals on fishing stuff there. I want to be able to prowl Cabela's bargain cave. That and I'd like to pick up some new trailhikers without having to pay shipping.

Wasn't there one prepared to open in Xanadu? For those of you outside the tri-state area, Xanadu is a prime example of a NJ clusterfuck. Just take a glance at the outside of the building. It looks like it was designed by a group of kindergartners... and that's the least of its problems.I was REALLY looking forward to Cabela's opening in NJ, but that now seems unlikely.

I pop into Dick's if I am in the area. They sometimes have good sales on .22 rifles and trap loads. Other than that, not so much.

Well yeah, it's mostly a clothing store, but the freshwater fishing department is OK, and it's convenient if I just need some nightcrawlers for day on the pond.Greg wrote:Yeah. There was one planned for Xanadu, but the last I saw was that that store was "unlikely" now. Of course all of Xanadu is "unlikely" now.rightisright wrote:Wasn't there one prepared to open in Xanadu? Like rightisright said, for those not from the area, Xanadu is a complete fustercluck. It was plagued by cost overruns, corruption, bribes, and just about any other way you can think of to waste money without actually using it in a bonfire. And of course the NJ taxpayers are DEEP in the hole on it, so the rationale has been "we have to funnel more tax dollars into it so it can become operational and collect taxes on it, otherwise all the tax dollars we've already flushed into it will be wasted."

I was doing a little Google-mapping of the area, and I just found something I've never seen before. At first I was wondering, "who the hell did that"... anyway on Google maps I found map data that captured an aircraft in flight. Look on Rt17 about a hundred yards south of where 120 passes over, near the new 5 Guys and where the new rail access to the Meadowlands forks off from the Pascack Valley line tracks. God bless [strike]Texas[/strike] Academy Sports + Outdoors.
Last time I was at my local Academy, they had a Sig 550 for sale.

Erm...it's by the new football stadium and across from the hockey stadium and that big shopping district. That's not anywhere near downtown Phoenix. I have known several people who have wanted very badly to visit the store while visiting AZ, all from California. I have found their prices to be underwhelming, particularly on the ammo side of thing. When I can get ammo shipped to my house from Texas for less that their pre tax sale price something is wrong.NVGdude wrote:Downtown Phoenix metro (Glendale but might as well be Phoenix) isn't exactly a sportsman's destination ether...CByrneIV wrote: their marketing concept is to create "destination" stores.
Southern California is someplace that sportsmen don't particularly travel to for those purposes.

My experience pretty much mirrors Greg's.
Dick's up in Overland Park, KS is full of pastel-colored sweat suits that will never feel even a hint of perspiration. The BMW/Lexus ratio to pickup trucks in the parking lot is on the order of 50:1. The guns and ammo section is in a small room in a back corner of the store. My local pawn shop has more ammo than Dick's. It appears Dick's has a policy of appealing to the local "market", which in Overland Park is GFWs.Greg wrote: The one Dick's I've been to seems mostly like the usual urban "sporting goods store", which actually means "clothes to wear while hitting on the hottie at the gym, plus a couple of tennis racquets and hockey sticks- store".
