That's what I give our Republic. Maybe 55 if McClown squeezes through.
T'was a glorious experiment and I plan on fighting its demise until my death. But, as a nation, we have become so bloated with bureaucracy, political correctness and governmental largess that I believe true socialism is imminent. There are just too many weak minded people who have no concept of independence.
Again, I'm not giving up. Hell, I've been banging my head against Authority's Wall since I was 15 and don't plan on stopping any time soon. I'll be that crazy ole coot on his front porch with a 12 gauge in one hand and a bottle of Maker's Mark in the other.
That boat done sailed, 96 (edit--y kant Ken add*) years ago. The discussion now is about how much more we can lose, or how much we can get back, and what it's gonna cost us in the doing.

It's already here.
Look at what we have already and tell me otherwise.
Social security
Medicare
Medicaid
TANIF
Food Stamps
Government [strike]education[/strike] indoctrination
Compulsory Charity (theft)
Government (partially) owned banks (again compulsory ("You're not leaving until it is signed"))
That scratches the surface of the socialist aspect, there is still the fascist angle and the would be tyrant angle.
I'm starting to understand how snake oil salesmen can rape their neighbors and still sleep at night. I have no desire to join them, thank God. I still have some shred of dignity/integrity/ honor left.
If you are unwilling to give another man freedom in his life, do not expect to have it in your own.
It surely beats trying to figure out what the metrosexuals want ( a good hard kick in the nuts in my opinion, but that won't sell ice cream :D )- Highspeed
FastRope: The Govt. owned banks is what has scared me. If their is no provisions to return the interest in the banks in the future we are fast down that road.
Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.

Now, when fascism shows up -- i.e., when free speech is suppressed, your guns are [strike]confiscated[/strike] "regulated", etc. -- that's a different question...
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.- Philip K. Dick
It’s Ayn Rand’s world, we’re just living in it. -- Glenn Reynolds
I don't think it's going too far to say that Obama is somewhat facist. Facism is not the same as Nazism. And fasizm is a form of socialism.
I voted early, because I'll be at work on Election Day. I held my breath, bit my tongue, and voted for McCain/Palin.
Then I drove home, and had an adult beverage to wash the bad taste out of my mouth. I'm really sick & tired of voting AGAINST someone; I want to vote FOR someone. I haven't been able to do that since Reagan.

Yep, we've got socialism-lite here already. I figure it'll come to full fruition only if we run out of reloading materials, and even then it'll take a while.
Remember, folks, you can't spell "douche" without "Che."
“PET PARENTS?” You’re not a “pet parent.” You’re a pet owner. Unless you’ve committed an unnatural act that succeeded in spite of biology. - Glenn Reynolds
Don't blame the government, necessarily. WE THE PEOPLE have stopped being self-reliant and independent and have become addicted to entitlements, and soft living.
Turn WE THE PEOPLE around and we can hold this thing off. Otherwise, the government will provide.
BTW, I think it's inevitable. If you stop requiring people to be responsible for themselves and their survival, socialism will take root.

+1 to that - you aren't alone. I used to be able to vote FOR someone in the local elections, but even that has changed.
I'm just a youngin' so I haven't been able to vote FOR someone except in the primaries. Hopefully that'll change next time around.
Oh, and I have to agree that socialism is already in play, however full-blown socialism will take another 10-20 years. The only thing we can do with this disease is fight it to the finish.
