BIL primary argument against the shotty is unwieldiness so he would have the same argument against a carbine / lever action. I think my sister is afraid of shotty recoil. I should probably take her shooting with a borrowed 20 ga so she can see it is half that of a 12 ga.
A 20 gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot will kick more than a 12-gauge unless you are using high-pressure hunting loads. Tactical, or self-defense, loads in the 12 gauge recoil a lot less than 20-gauge loads.

Regardless I think this is a good application for the pistol-caliber carbine. I particularilly like the M1 Carbine (with Remington soft point loads), though we can argue about whether it is a "pistol-caliber" or not.

Just went to the local Bass Pro Shop today and they had a sale on S&W J-frames. 419.99, just a few bucks more than the equivalent Taurus, and actually less than the Rugers which weren't on sale. They had all three flavors- exposed hammer (637), hammerless (642), and shrouded hammer (638). (Model 637 pics to follow in 7 to 10 days...) I don't know how long the sale will last, but it would be worth the time to go check, unless you have a cheaper source close to home. We don't, at least not one I know about... and the online auctions would have wound up costing us more by the time we paid shipping and transfer fees. As usual, everything is more expensive here in the People's Republic of Maryland. I'm just grateful that we don't live in DC.

BIL is deploying soon. Heading off to training even sooner.

Sister has a 5 shot S&W in .357 in a snubbie format. She won't carry it but insisted on the short barrel. Now if she would actually (at least) car carry it. She and my nephew put 100 rounds threw a few weeks ago, but I think this was a make the husband shut up move not a change of heart on her part.

Unfortunately, as soon as he leaves it will likely be locked up and forgotten about until a week before he gets home. Horse - water - drink...
