I went for a beer tonight, and because I smoke I had to stand outside for much of the evening.
It's not even that cold, but I feel like I'm a cripple, I'm hobbling around like an old man. All the injuries I picked up crashing bikes, getting beaten up in fights and working construction jobs have really come home to roost. Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse ? How about live fast and be old before your time. All my own fault, no-one else to blame.
The previous five months in a warm dry climate have reduced my tolerance for muscular and joint pain, because it went away gradually and has now come back with a bang.
I can obtain prescription opiate painkillers from my doctor ( and a lot of other places too ), but I don't get along with them because they make my brain fuzzy and I hate it. I suppose if I took them often enough I would get used to the effects, but then I'd have a monkey on my back. Marvellous socialist healthcare here once got me physically addicted to morphine thanks to a malfunctioning automatic pain relief system when I was in hospital and then instead of tailing the dosage off they put me through cold turkey. Bastards. I found out that Popeye Doyle's experience in the French Connection 2 was quite true to life. Don't even mention Trainspotting.
I hope we sell our house soon, the last two weeks have been concerned with finding some way to help the prospective buyers get a mortgage, it's driving me nuts. We already dropped the price by $15,000 and are offering to pay the deposit for the buyer as long as it's not more than 5%.
So I'm pissed off, please someone cheer me up....

We just sold our "brick albatross" that had been on the market for almost a year, and went through similar gyrations to help the prospective buyers make their down payment and closing costs, so cheer up, they do eventually sell! I'm just thrilled to not be making two housepayments anymore, especially with the slowdown at work.
And I fully understand about the aches and pains! Damage done in a variety of venues has left me with an in-depth understanding of "it ain't the years, it's the mileage!"
Don't quit now, you can't give the bastards the satisfaction!

I buy rolling tobacco, I'm not too sure what manufactured cigarettes cost. A really stupid amount of money, maybe $10 for a packet of 20 ? something like that.mekender wrote:how much does a pack of smokes cost over there?
I get my tobacco in bulk when I travel to Spain. You don't pay UK tax on it that way ( as long as you don't get caught ) I get through about a pouch a week at the cost of $5 for shortening my lifespan

You got your licks serving your country ( and by wider association, the Free World ) though, I got mine by being an asshole.

No, except for the hearing loss, bad knees, and an allergy to sudden loud noises, I did most of the damage playing football and riding bulls ( and some by being an asshole).
Believe it or not, I wasn't always a shining paragon of manly virtue. (And I've got the scars and paperwork to prove it!)

Eh? I'd get up and come closer but the noise my knees make getting up and down frightens meCByrneIV wrote:Sounds kinda familiar...First Shirt wrote:No, except for the hearing loss, bad knees, and an allergy to sudden loud noises, I did most of the damage playing football and riding bulls ( and some by being an asshole).

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

If it weren't for the aches and pains, I'd wonder if I were alive every morning.
As for the popping, snapping and cracking, that's a warning to anyone stupid enough to get in my way.
Not the years but the mileage is right. But why did all of it have to be off-road?
