OTOH, if you like the look of military swords, and might like a miniature as a letter opener, take a look at these. This is the one I have (yes, the blade is quite dull but the point is still very sharp):

Granted, these will not perform anything like your original request knife, nor any other "REAL" blade - but they look cool, don't need to be resharpened after cutting open envelopes, but can still stab like a mofo (then break it off inside them), so you can get to your real knife, or your gun, so you can get to your shotgun or rifle to finish the fight.

I have a second-pattern Fairbairn that was given to me by a nephew of a man who carried it across Europe. He didn't care to collect such things and thought that I might care for it. I told him that I'd honorably retire it, and it lives on a shelf with my reloading dies. Used mainly for opening envelopes, I haven't sharpened it, because I don't want to disturb the patina. However, it still opens envelopes handily, and stands watch on that bench in case it is called on for more serious work.

I am constantly amazed how many people stand near my bench and never see that knife. It's at eye level for most men, yet their eyes will pass across it for something else. Yet, it's probably the most historically-significant piece I have on that shelf.

I understand you're looking for something with a little character, that also won't be mistaken for anything else and so is less likely to wander off....

Would something like a small khukuri be a little too quirky? I've been tempted to get one for my own desk. Some makers make tiny letter-opener models, or small utility models that would also be useful on a desk but can do other small tasks as well.
