computer / software question

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

computer / software question

Post by Precision »

The GF's 17 year old daughter is now officially living with us. A good thing.

The bad side of that is she stays up way too late playing online games etc and we need a grenade to get her out of bed in the morning. Product of a non-structured environment with dad. School starts in a few days and that will not work.

I'm thinking rather than taking away her laptop every night and reissuing it in the morning (she needs it for school), it would be easier to block her laptop from the network from 11PM to 6AM. Is there a way to do that with software.

I have a mother in law suite with a tenant who uses our wifi so I can't just unplug it, not to mention I have to unplug it and replug it daily. I want a set and forget option, if possible.

And yes, training in some personal responsibility is in progress but that will not suffice in the time. :(

Ice. Bucket. Water. Some assembly required, but guaranteed 1000% effective.

Best bet is to issue static IP's from the wifi router and revoke her's at night. Unless your router offers the option to allow access at certain hours. Also, do your neighbors have wireless? Or her phone? She still might have options...

Best bet is being direct and hitting the source of the problem rather getting into a cold war.

ROFL. "Guncounter: We be geeks" uhhh..., This is a case where technology solution may be the last resort.

having a 22, 18 and 15 yr old daughter still under the roof I'm wondering what currency (cash, priviledges, vehicle, yadda, yadda) do you have that she needs or desires?

e.g. Does she really love her bedroom door? Does she love her bedroom door more than staying online after lights out? Take her door if you need to. I mean take it off the hinges and stash it where she can't get it.

There actually may be parental controls in the games she's playing but good luck getting her to give you access to them. On the computer I managed to outflank my parents every time. They set a user password which I quickly cracked (dads middle name) and then set my own admin password.

Chris has it, of course.

Anything people talk about concerning IP assignment, DHCP leases (and revocation), time-based blacklisting... Chris' comment applies.

By hitting the source of the problem I mean by locking up the laptop when you hit the rack.

I was trying to avoid having to add one more thing for the GF and I to to police. Perhaps when school starts she will not have so much temptation as she is riding to school with me to a school where I will be her teacher 2 periods a day.

That alone may fix the too sleepy to get up, but I wanted a back up plan.

Seems like the back up plan is "give me the computer" when we go to bed.

Thanks guys

WTF! She is 17. Tell her she is responsible for getting up and ready for school. If she doesn't get with the program after the first few days back to school sit her down. Tell her she has a week to get with the program and detail what the consequences are if she fails. Make sure that it is the girlfriend doing the talking. The more you try to control her the more she will want to rebel. Being 17, living at home, and going to high school is all about screwing up and learning from your mistakes. You and the girlfriend need to be supportive but let her know that if she screws up badly there are consequences.

When I was in high school my summer vacation and weekends were completely different from school days. I still got good grades, marched in the marching band, walked to school 2 out of 4 years and worked a part time job 3 out of 4 years.
