The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

I suspect what's really retarded in that situation is your buddy, for letting someone search his truck, and the backpack.
But anyone who suggests that putting a rifle in a carry case would leave you liable to prosecution for concealed carry of a weapon is being an idiot not to be taken seriously. Yes children, NJ specifies that you're supposed to carry a firearm in a case (they want it to be locked) and won't arrest you for doing so. They MAY arrest you for making unauthorized stops between the gun store and your home, or the range and your home, but that is a completely separate issue.
I had just given it to him to go with the Mauser I have him for Christmas. They prosecuted and wanted him to plea to a weapons (which he was gong to) until I told him two things;
1. I would pay for a lawyer
2. No jury in the world would convict him when aforementioned lawyer placed the gun and old bayo on the table as exhibit 1 and 2 and point out the bayo is what he is being harassed over.
After he told the DA he was going all the way to court they folded but he is a terrible negotiator (which is why he should have taken the lawyer anyway) He ended up pleading (against my advice) to "obstructing a roadway" which is the vehicular equivalent to jaywalking.
Uh, OK.

OK, that's pretty ridiculous. He must have been found guilty of contempt of cop, or poor fashion sense or something.

Tada!
I was thinking more "I don't like the look of your face", but OK.
