The man had a 5 shot bolt action rifle. There were 12 kids.

For lack of a better term, I call it "lethal math".

Yes, it's a 5 rd gun and there were 12 of them. THat means a minimum of 7 that you can't shoot(discounting the bayonet). Problem is, who's gonna volunteer to get a lead injection? Ever seen the often used scene in the movies where the bad guy and his minions have the hero surrounded, Bad guy points out the lethal math, and orders them to "get him!". Hero responds by saying yup, he'll run out of bullets fairly quick, and then promptly shoots one of the mooks(the best is when they get shot in the face ) and then quip "WHO'S FIRST?"

It's a safe bet that these disadvantaged yoots didn't know the capacity of the rifle that was being pointed at them. It's also a safe bet that they knew, at least instinctively, that a rifle can do a lot more damage than a handgun.

I don't know if the gentleman had the bayonet extended. I'm not sure if I would. It would definitely up the intimidation factor quite a bit, but it would make the weapon unwieldly in a close-quarters urban environment. The Mosin-Nagant pattern rifles do make excellent clubs though.

Anyhow, the brown of the apron fully clashed with his tank top, sarong, and combat boots. I will probably be dressing like that in less than ten years.

Was he a little guy with a smile and a big rifle? That's more scary than a big guy with a frown and a little gun.

I remember reading about a Texas Ranger explaining Lethal Math to a mob that wanted his prisoner. He had two pistols in shoulder holsters, and said he'd likely get 6 or 7 before they got him, but who among them would want even those odds?

Besides, who knows? Our hero with the M44 and the sarong might have been able to get 2 or more with a single bullet.
