9x18 makarov for SD

Post by Precision »

My BIL is heading overseas for a year.

He is buying my sister a SD pistol for the house. My sister has carpal tunnel and is FAR from a gunny. By BIL had suggested a P3AT but I don't think that is a good home (only) gun due to iffy caliber, huge felt recoil for caliber and that it takes a fair amount of practice to have any real accuracy with. If she was going to carry it, I would consider it an acceptable compromise. One battle at a time here.

One of the guns they / she is considering is a CZ-82. My thought is 9x18 is better than 9x17 and the extra width of the grip / weight of the gun should make it pretty easy recoiling, it has 12 rounds and is fairly simple to operate. Am I correct in that assumption?

I also question ammo availability and SD related HP effectiveness.

In my brief search all I found for SD was the Hornady XTP for $1 a round. Other options, anyone run a milk jug or gel test on these or any other 9x18 rounds?

Thanks

Sounds like all she's getting is a noise maker..

Why not a shotgun?

Yes, revolver, but if it's strictly for home defense, a 20 gauge pump is probably a better choice. Better yet, both, so she'll have the option of CCW, without giving up the power of the shotgun for HD.

What he said.
Add a good trigger job. A K frame Smith can be slicked up to greasy glass smoothness.

I really like my CZ82 but I would not recommend it for someone with the qualifications you provide.
It's a handful with a heavy trigger pull and a recoil like a sharp slap.
Having said that: J&G Sales in Prescott has 9x18 JHP for $12.50. (JGSALES.com)

I second Chris's suggestion, a double-action revolver like a Ruger SP 101. I have Melody's old one. I lightened the hammer and trigger springs and it's a delight to shoot, easy to operate and 100% reliable.

See how something like a Model 10 S&W or Ruger Service/Speed/Security Six suits her hand. Plenty of after market grip options for those as well.

This. JG gun sales has a bunch of used model 14s for under $300

Another vote for a K frame or its equivalent. I pack a CZ 82, and it's a decent little gun. However, I would NOT describe it as pleasant or fun to shoot, at least not for the recoil sensitive.

As an aside, the Hornady XTP ammo is great stuff. I use it in all my pistols.

Yeah, + whatever on a revolver. All the same reasons plus you can buy ammo suited to self defense and even ones with limited recoil.

I have been pitching the revolver idea.
BIL and I went to Bass Pro for some Father's day present and we spent a fair amount of time looking at and discussing the various options. I kept pointing him towards the revolvers and he kept not liking the 5/6 round capacity. After while, I reminded him that his first idea was the P3AT.

Now getting my sister over to the local gun store may be a bit more tricky. But I think if I insert myself into the conversation, she will go and actually pay attention. We'll see about making a decision. But the good news is Mom announced she is getting a carry permit. :D

I also suggested the 20 gauge idea. Neither my sister or BIL were very keen on that. Shame too as it is the most forgiving in so many manners.

Gotta call her and see if I can't drag her to the gun store tomorrow.
