A good rule of thumb is if you can't see where the car ahead of you's tires contact the pavement, you're too close. It's simple, it's easy and after awhile it will become habit.

Something ceases to be a hoax in my book when an agitated person comes at my car with a crowbar. I don't care if it's a shirtless black man, Donald Trump, or Lady GaGa. If I can't drive away from that the perp is either getting shot or run over.Jered wrote:Some dude just decided to attack some random car.
Next time hit the gas.
Supposedly, it was a hoax, but it's still a good way to get someone shot.
If someone fucks with you're ride while you're in it as far as I'm concerned that person means to cause you bodily harm, and any means necessary to get out of it are applicable.

If you mean with a firearm because he's beating on the body of your car you'll go to jail and lose a civil court case in most states.Frankingun wrote: If someone fucks with you're ride while you're in it as far as I'm concerned that person means to cause you bodily harm, and any means necessary to get out of it are applicable.
You can be in a firearm ready position for when he breaks the window and not be charged with brandishing if he doesn't breach the window. You can drive over the curb and run somebody over and probably not be charged with harming another. But you can't shoot in most states until they breach the window.

There is a little book (more a pamphlet) called Drive to Survive, by Curt Rich. IIRC he was a multiple graduate at Col. Cooper's Gunsite (so somebody who had given personal safety a good deal of thought), and Cooper recommended the book.randy wrote:Bingo!HTRN wrote:A good rule of thumb is if you can't see where the car ahead of you's tires contact the pavement, you're too close. One of the things that Drive to Survive emphasises is that you should stop short enough of the vehicle in front so that you can see its tyres on the road - that leaves you enough room to manoeuvre around it if necessary.

Re: Why you need a gun.
Many, many moons ago, one of my many part time jobs, I drove a cab while going to college. In those days, the cabs were Checker Marathons, absolute tanks. One hot Friday night, I got a fare going to a very dangerous housing project (ever heard of Cabrini-Green?). I dropped her off, then headed back to Division Street to get back to the Rush Street night club district.
I had the "Not for Hire" sign out (no way I'd pick somebody up there). A group of about a half dozen punks tried to flag me down. The last one stepped into the street and lowered gun at me.
I ducked and floored it. I heard a shot. I hit the punk. I didn't stop.
Back near Rush Street, I pulled up next to a police car.
"Some punks tried to hold me up in the Green. One fired a shot, and I ducked, and I'm pretty sure I ran him down."
The two cops looked at each other, then the driver turned to me and said, "It's Friday night, and we're very busy." Then they drove off.
It was standard practice, even then, to never pull up to stopped vehicle without leaving enough room to get around, and escape if necessary.

You mean Jane Byrne's official residence, for all of what, 5 minutes?Bob K wrote:(ever heard of Cabrini-Green?).
Chicago DJ Steve Dahl had a song with a chorus of "Cabrini-Green where the rent's dirt cheap", to the tune of AC/DC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.
Nah, never heard of it!

I learned in my offensive driving training to leave room for maneuver and to pick a lane where you can push out. You also are supposed to smash other cars in an escape situation. Also stop with the tires of the car in front visible.

Too bad Colonel Cooper never heard of your incident. He would have included it in his Cooper's corner for sure, as he always thought what the cops said to you was the only proper response to icing a goblin.Bob K wrote:The two cops looked at each other, then the driver turned to me and said, "It's Friday night, and we're very busy." The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .

This is at the top of the comment section:
Well said.@av8trbbv I'm black, and I would have shot that fool. I live in Las Vegas, a few blocks from where this happened, in a secure complex, that most can not afford to live in, white, or black. I open carry for just this type of idiot. That guy is no longer on that corner, and is either dead, or in prison. I'm assuming your refering to ignorant activities, with the monkey's, and nigger's remarks, and not a race of people.
