FUCK THAT NOISE. I'm a firm believer in the Douglas Adams school of Weapon Design:

The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. When the British survey asked what inventions people most wanted to see become reality, men voted for time machines and teleportation, while women hoped for something more practical: a universal cure for all diseases.

I'd say teleportation would be really useful and practical; it would save me a bunch of money on gas, and a lot of time, too.

Universal cure for all diseases? Then how is Mother Nature supposed to thin the herd?

Teleportation would revolutionize surgery. Imagine organ transplants and joint replacements as outpatient procedures that leave no scars.

That's something that doesn't make sense. Hand to hand combat is WAY more brutal than shooting someone from afar. Watching your victim as his eyes go wide and his mouth is gasping for his last breath as you plunge you laser-sword into his chest that's civilized?

And what about the dismemberment? Cutting your foe in half, or taking his arms and legs off? That's somehow civilized?

The "civilized" part comes from having a dominant "warrior class" to rule over us lowly peons. Anybody can figure out how to use a blaster; effectiveness with contact weapons requires a level of skill that can only be honed through years of study and countless hours of practice, and ordinary working people normally don't have the sort of leisure time required to achieve that. So, you wind up with things like hereditary rule, a permanent upper class, etc. Fuck that noise.
