Well, it was probably still more reliable than a new MG...

Actually the Cruiser had a very successful 10 year run. Yeah sales dropped off the last year or two, but they still built 1.35 million of them.
Which just proves there really is a fool born somewhere every minute.
It was effectively a small economy-car-based station wagon. At a time when nobody made station wagons (it proved there was a niche for something like the Matrix/Vibe) and the small SUV (like CRV or Rav-4) was just getting going. There WAS a good utility-based argument for buying one.

As for the horrid faux-retro styling, the Neon mechanicals and the fact that initially it sold for WELL over sticker- well you've got me there. :D

This is a non issue. Have you seen the kinds of people that buy those things?
The Element? That would be old people, for antiqueing/flea-marketing. Seriously.

What killed the PT Cruiser was the widespread introduction of the "crossovers", and the fact that the PT was a gutless wonder(Neon drivetrain - a car that was 2/3rd the PTs weight) that handled like an elephant on rollerskates.

And VWs are HORRIBLE cars. They(along with every other Euro brand) consistently finish at the bottom of the JD power Warranty claim surveys.
