Sorry - that's no excuse. The tech necessary to split the feed to serve the live/local and TV audiences is trivial - and any competent engineers at that level would ensure that each was properly mixed. Most producers would rather have it suck for just the TV audience, because nothing sounds good over a backdrop of boos.
I've done - and recorded - countless shows in venues from the worst dive-bars to HS gyms to outdoor flatbed-trailer "stages" in an open field, using the most rudimentary equipment for both PA and recording, and my absolute worst screwups were better than the fiasco we're discussing.
Nope - the suggested punishments (above) don't go far enough to give those responsible for this travesty the "reward" they so richly deserve.
