looking for good solar powered lights

Post by gandalf23 »

We did some clearing out of the weeds turned bushes/trees that were covering our backyard this weekend. 42 man hours of work! Now I've been tasked with adding lights. But we've got no power out there in the backyard. The previous owner's executor told us we did, but we don't. Eventually I'll get power out there. I will need it for my workshop if nothing else, but for now, I need something, so I though I'd add some solar lights. But I don't know what is good and what is bad. I've had bad luck with solar path lights in the past. We've bought 20 or so of them this past year and maybe two work?

I'd like to add a "rural" light like what you see outside barns on the outside of the shed. And in the bbq grill area some string lights like what people put out on their houses at Christmas.

Anyone know of good, quality solar powered lights like that?

Here is some pictures of what it did look like and what it looks like now:

quality - read as professional installer solar are quite expensive.

When I did that kind of work, the least expensive ones were in the $30 range EACH and ranged up to $200.

John Deere landscape doesn't seem to have a user friendly web interface.

but I did find this compilation of available lights

If you find any good solar lights, let me know! As a contractor, people are always asking me about lighting up their outdoor areas w. solar. So far I haven't been able to find anything that has a reasonable output w/o a huge panel.

If you are looking for a temporary solution until you run a hardwire out, consider running low voltage lights. Transformer at the house and cable buried only an 1" below the soil out to the lights. With the newer LED low volt lights, you can get quite a bit of illumination from 12 volts. 12v LED rope lighting is a nice way to outline a BBQ area.

ETA: I've ordered rope lighting from this company several times: http://1000bulbs.com/

We ended up buying a lot of "commercial grade" GE outdoor Christmas lights from Lowes the day after Christmas for 60% off. Ran an extension cord from the house to the back and they look pretty good wrapped around the tress back there. Now just need to get a timer or light sensor for them so they'll come on at dusk. I'd've preferred solar, but I think this'll work till we can get permanent power out there and some real lights.
