For all the comfort and confidence that carrying a firearm provides, the downside is that there is a Lawyer or two behind every bullet. Personally I think its important to be as physically capable as possible given an individuals particular health and capacity.
It does not take a great deal of martial arts training (or boxing skill for that matter) to significantly up your chances of overcoming a foe. Both in law enforcement and in private life I have seen well trained people exercise control over individuals much larger and stronger than them (There is always someone stronger) by way of training and skill.

Okay, now to the question. I would have dropped that guy like a dirty shirt with a roundhouse kick to his chest . If he tried to get up I would have put him out..well out.

Fuck that. Nothing against unarmed combat training, and I don't really see the downside to it, but I'm not going to get in a brawl with a violent goblin just to avoid shooting him. I've got near zero in the way of fighting aptitude, so if I AM carrying, realistically all I am doing is giving him access to my gun by taking him on hand to hand.

+1, besides, if the jackass is a methhead, breaking a few of his ribs probably just gets him to switch his focus...

I think that if deadly force were used in that particular scenario you would have many years behind bars to reconsider your actions. There are three "phases" to using force - 1. knowing what you can do, 2. physically/mentally being capable of winning the fight, 3. being able to clearly articulate what you did and why. I don't see any jury buying that the use of deadly force was necessary on that assault.
That's my opinion. You are welcome to yours.

IMO, not worth a shot, but what about a pistol whip? I don't know of the difference in court of a shot versus whip, and I know pretty much all blunt weapons are illegal in OH, so it seems like a good whack would be in order.

You have to pull your weapon to pistol whip. There has been a case here many years ago a guy was going to do that very thing and the weapon discharged. The guy was killed. He was of course a shithead but guess who went to jail for that? Nope if you pull your weapon be ready to use it as it was made for. Using one for a sap or similar tool isn't smart.

To say nothing of the fact that closing to contact distance gives the bad guy the opportunity to take it away from you.

Never use your gun to pistol-whip someone. It could mar the finish.
