Post by 308Mike »

Not to take anything away from our own authors like Moose42, Jericho941, etc., etc., but Larry Correia now has his latest installment of the MHI series out:

Product Description

Accountant turned professional monster hunter, Owen Zastava Pitt, managed to stop the nefarious Old One’s invasion plans last year, but as a result made an enemy out of one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Now an evil death cult known as the Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition wants to capture Owen in order to gain the favor of the great Old Ones.

The Condition is led by a fanatical necromancer known as the Shadow Man. The government wants to capture the Shadow Man and has assigned the enigmatic Agent Franks to be Owen’s full time bodyguard, which is a polite way of saying that Owen is monster bait.

With supernatural assassins targeting his family, a spy in their midst, and horrific beasties lurking around every corner, Owen and the staff of Monster Hunter International don’t need to go hunting, because this time the monsters are hunting them. Fortunately, this bait is armed and very dangerous . . .

About the Author
Larry Correia is hopelessly addicted to two things: guns and B-horror movies. He lists his occupations: gun dealer, firearms instructor, accountant, and writer, and was until recently part owner of a company specializing in firearms and movie props. He shoots competitively and is a certified concealed weapons instructor. Larry resides in Utah with his very patient wife and family.

POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON

A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.

I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

Got the e-book a month or so ago. Kick-ass!

ETA: His blog is here

He has several other books in progress, including some not in the MHI series.
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

Where's the review?!?!?!?!? J/K! ;) :D

What do you think, is it better than the first one? Any glaring issues/problems? Anything which might be better if the reader is forewarned about certain items so they don't have to go out and do their own research to figure out what he's talking about?

It's better in my opinion (had to Amazon it, wasn't appearing on my local bookstore shelves, and I got impatient). Starts right from the get-go and doesn't stop. Funnier and more over the top than the first one, plus some good character development. Sets up nicely at the end, too. You'll love it.

Dunno about better (MHI was a surprise and refreshing to me), but at least as good. I don't read fiction critically, but nothing tripped the Bullshit! filters.

You do need to have read the original MHI to follow characters and back story, but he does a good job in working explanations of the rules of how his universe works. Just don't get hung up on how beasties operate in other books/movies, and sometimes he doesn't explain something right away because the characters don't know what it is and learning is part of the narrative.

Much Gun Geekery (and I mean that in a good way), but that shouldn't be an issue with this crowd.

Some great jabs on Fed bureaucrats (I'm not posting spoilers) that GC members will appreciate.

Recommended. I will buy the next one in the series.

Larry is on my list of authors (David Drake, Eric Flint, John Ringo, Pournelle and Niven aren't publishing much these days) that I will buy on sight.

Very minor spoiler below:

Is Melvin who I think he is?

And I'm not a fan of the cover, after how technically correct the first one looked.

I asked Larry about this when he did a signing in Phoenix last month and yes Melvin the troll is based on exactly who you think he is based on.
