They can prove that the buckshot that hit them in their shins came out of my shotgun?
Wow! That's some serious CSI level $%&* there.
Must be from the rifling marks right?
Couldn't resist.

If you can see the whites of their eyes, they're too close.

But seriously, review what you "need" not just what you'd like.
Do you need something that will reach out and touch something at 200-500 yards?
Will out to 200Y suffice?
Or is 50Y a long shot?
Do you need a high volume of fire? (Realistically if you do, you're in a mess and an air strike is more appropriate)

If the 200-500Y answer is yes, you need a full power rifle. The previously mentioned Rem 760 will do on the cheap as will most decent surplus bolt actions although slowly. CDNN had the Eagle polymer 10 rounders for $8 a piece for the short and long action 760's.

If the range might hit 200Y your'e good to go with the 7.62x39 AK round or the .223 in most situations. I'm still not a fan of either but for a cheap blaster, they'll do.

If 50Y is a ways out there, the scattergun and a mixture of 00 Buck and slugs will suffice.
I can stack slugs from a bead sighted 'riot' Ithaca 37 on a small coffee can at 25Y and can keep the larger ones rolling beyond 50Y. But I practice a lot.
Buckshot makes hitting somewhat easier and less dangerous to non-combatants at the short ranges.

There's almost nothing a good rifle can't handle. It may not be ideal but will generally perform yeoman service. When you need a rifle, you NEED a rifle. The others will not perform at the same levels.

However if I could pick up a .30-30 Marlin 336 used, preferably from a local 'oldster' I'd jump on it. The 4-5 round capacity doesn't hurt realistically. If I had to trim down to minimal, really minimal weapons it would be one of the last to go. Enough power to hunt with and not so much recoil to beat the shooter up. Most of these are high (carry) mileage and low round count guns that only need a good cleaning to bring back their factory luster inside.

I'm thinking along the same lines as CC. Get an 870 Express or Mossberg 500 for a couple of hundred bucks. Buy some 00 buck and some slugs.
My ideas are mine. You go out and get your own!

i would go for a shotgun, the Mossberg 500 is good or a 590 is even better, if you were worried about facing looters. something about looking down a 3/4" bore tends to persuade people to leave you and your stuff alone. f your worried about not having it before a ban, get an EBR. or what would be even better is a Saiga 12, its an EBS (Evil Black Shotgun), it fits the profile of an EBR and has the properties of a good riot gun.

but slow to reload as spare mags and hen's teeth rate the same on rarity (IIRC).

Baton Rouge? The shotgun posts by CC, Wizard, 1911, et al are probably the best advice. Urban or suburban locales aren't rifle territory - too many opportunities for collateral damage.

I have a Mossberg 12 gauge pump loaded with #4 buckshot for indoor social work (cheap and reliable). I have no problem with stepping outside and using it for "perimeter work". If your concern is about neighborhood rioting, a shotgun should serve you well.

I think I will be slipping out of the house to do a bit of pawn shopping tomorrow. The target will be a shotgun of some sort, we'll see what we find.

I always go by the adage: "better to be judged by eight or twelve than carried by six!" and many times that when the six would be carrying my wife or any of my kids. If you ARE worried about it, get a Saiga 12 instead for around $500. A bit high for a shotgun, but that shotgun will eb priceless in a riot, you'll just have to let them get MUCH closer. The ten round mags are around $50, and 20 round drums $350. Get slugs and OO buckshot, and you are set. The Saiga is rated for slugs and the shot unlike the ill-fated Striker" and "StreetSweeper" although the Saiga may soon share their fate. A stock Saiga 12 was once around $400, but supply delays and fears of future reclassification ran out supplies and they were only available on gunbroker for over $800. That has subsided somewhat although they are still a little high. Great shotgun, great system, based on an Kalishnikov action, and easily and quickly reloaded, if the need arises, unlike your cheaper traditonal pumps, which as fine as long as you dont need a quick tatical reload. The recoil is mild and the action is as fast as you can pull the trigger.

I used to recommend the short range practice of "gallery rounds" available in 7.62 X 54R for the Moison, but they are really hard to find. If you can find them great! They are lethal at shorter ranges and have an intimidation factor of a huge fireball out of the muzzle. Intimidation is important especially during a riot and especially close up!

He may be talking Grand Juries, some have only 8 IIRC.

Speaking of riots, I am still waiting for my OJ riot. Where the hell is it? Been about a week, I would think with modern communications we would have had one by now.
