Oversized (MONSTER-SIZED) Piranha

Post by 308Mike »

When I saw these pictures, I thought OMG, that thing is HUGE and with those teeth, an INCREDIBLY dangerous fish:

And this one too:

AFTER an eight-day monster battle a British fisherman has caught one of the world's most fearsome freshwater fish.

Monster catch on Congo fishing trip

Expert fisherman Jeremy Wade has caught a 50 kilogram tigerfish during a fishing expedition in Africa.
Angler Jeremy Wade wrestled the 5ft-long goliath tigerfish during a fishing expedition along the Congo River in Africa.

The tigerfish - believed to be a deadlier version of the piranha - has 32 teeth that are a similar size to those of a great white shark and has been known to attack humans and even crocodiles, the UK's Daily Mail reports.

Mr Wade reeled in the 45kg beast as part of aTV show about mythical reports from around the world of humans being attacked by unknown monsters from the deep.

“'It is very rare to catch one, especially by an outsider because they are found in such a remote and difficult location to get to,” Mr Wade said on the show River Monsters.

“There are no guides or lodges on that part of the Congo River.”

Mr Wade said he used catfish as bait for the tigerfish and a 91kg rod and line.

He said he feared handling the monster fish and had to stand back from it until it was safely in his landing net.

“It is a very dangerous fish to handle. If you aren't careful it could easily take your finger off or worse,” he said.

After carefully avoiding the creature’s razor-sharp teeth while posing for photos, Mr Wade said he returned it to the river soon afterwards

I wouldn't want to come up against that fish ANYWHERE, unless I was standing on a boat and pointing a rifle at it with a backup of a dozen fragmentation grenades!

GEEZ! I'd NEVER seen anything like that as far as being an oversized Piranha I mean the teeth are massive and long, and you KNOW that once they get a bite into something and don't want to let go, they're along for the ride!!

Protect and defend against something like this??? The easiest method is AVOIDANCE!! And if you HAVE to be near where they haunt, I'd suggest a 12-GA short-barrel auto, and if there's too much mud and dirt, a pump. Because even though they kill 'gators in Louisiana with .22's, if I was in a fight with either one of these OR a 'gator, give me a damn 12-GA (with either steel 00-BUCK or slugs) every single time.

That's one scary fish!

So...what was the rationale for letting it go?!
When you finally catch a "monster" that "has been known to attack humans", the result should be a big damn frying pan.
If time, chance and random process can produce a platypus why not an ammo tree?

I can't believe the MCB hasn't done a cover up on this yet.

? Tigerfish are pretty popular game fish - I don't know about the rarity, etc - the size is impressive.

This is a Goliath Tigerfish, not the ordinary Tigerfish. Tigerfish are a popular gamefish, but the Goliath Tigerfish isn't as widespread. And neither is related to the piranha in any way except that both are fish with teeth.

There's lots of stories of different fish attacking humans, but I'm pretty sure that in most cases it's a case of mistaken identity, the fish sees something move and attacks it. It is not uncommon that people get attacked by northern pike, even though they dont have the size or the set of teeth needed to actually do serious damage. The Tigerfish does have the tools to do serious damage, and the Goliath has the size as well.

You're willing to be in a boat? You're braver than I am. I'd be perfectly happy waiting for it on the shore. In a tree.

Note to self, rig depth charge racks to the bass boat before going after one of these...

I don't think you'll have to go to that extreme - 'cause in such a little boat, those depth charges would wreck havoc on your little floating island with engine.

You'd be MUCH better off using a string of M-67 fragmentation grenades and ripping the pins out while they were underwater.

Anything close to them would simply be shredded, 'gator's included.
