Hidey Guns Around The House

Ok, it's clear that if the doctor up in CT would have had a gun hidden in his basement...ANY gun, he might have been able to save the lives of his wife and daughters, even if he couldn't have prevented their rapes. This has led to my rethinking an expanded arsenal which would allow me to hide several weapons at key areas around the house, in case the Goblins should ever take me and mine unaware.

This also led me to think about what various people might be able to afford. My personal choice would lean towards a few Taurus model 85's stashed in hidden, yet convenient locales. And certainly, being a Medical Doctor, this guy could have afforded an arsenal. However, some are on a budget. Not everyone has this doctor's means or even my more modest, yet still sufficient, means. They may not be able to afford several 1911's, S&W or even Taurus revolvers, or other such higher quality hanguns.

Still, as we've determined on this site, even a cheap gun is better than no gun at all. If this is you and your family, what could you do for your various "stash" guns, which are conveniently hidden to allow you to fight your way to your main arsenal?

There's always Hi-Point. Still, someone might want a revolver. A cheap revolver is less likely to malfunction than a cheap semi-auto. If we're playing the odds, it's true. No arguments, please. That's not the point of this thread.

At roughly $100.00, you could buy 3or 4 of these fellas, load 'em with .32 S&W Long, and stash them around the house. A .32 may not begin with a "4," but I still wouldn't want to be shot by one. Besides, we're talking about an emergency hold-out here, not the perfect scenario.

I thought the Rough Rider in .22LR might also fit the bill, but .32 S&W Long would carry a bit more spank, plus due to it's being built to military specs, it is probably a bit more sturdy and reliable. Still, it beats the heck out of a pointy stick.

I know the trigger on the Nagant sucks and the Rough Rider is only single action, but we're talking emergency, here. Besides, a $20 trigger job on the Nagant would probably make a big difference in this stolid brick of a handgun.

What does a S&W m14 or K38 cost there? Here they can be found at between $200 and $500, and is probably the cheapest guns around that's not a 22. I'm sure they must be a lot cheaper in the US. I find them very reliable and accurate, and not too hard to handle, I shot it well enough the first time I held one as a beginner.

For about the same price here you could get a CG63 or other 6.5*55 caliber rifle. They're not handguns, but they're not that cumbersome, and I know several cases of badguys running out of houses here when the owner produced one from under his bed (some oldtimers never really got the point of gunsafes, their gun has always been safe in their bedrooms...)
I used to keep my longguns in back of my sofa (when that was still legal, long time ago) and I'm sure there are lots of other places where you can put a rifle or shotgun out of sight and still within reach.

Unfortunately, I think you are missing my point.

I know you could afford ONE (1) gun of a higher quality for what you would pay for 3 or 4 of the cheaper variety. I'm offering a suggestion on how a family on a tight budget could afford multiple handguns for stashing around the house. Let's say they want some other, hidden options besides the main Remington 870 or whatever. Something that, when you've been beaten and tied up in the basement, you can grab FROM the basement because it's an extra that has previously been HIDDEN in the basement. Yet, this family doesn't have a lot of money, so they can only afford to spend no more than $300-$400 total. Given that, what are your thoughts?

Well, I got your point, I just dont know much about US prices.
I figured that if I could find a gun for $200 here, I might be able to find the same gun for $100 in the US, because of lower taxes, less regulation and more availability. That's why I thought of the S&W revolver, it's one of the cheapest guns you can find here, and if it was half the price in the US you could get 3-4 of them on the $300-$400 budget. Same with the old rifles.

That of course assumes that you could actually find them for $100 there. From your response I take it that I'm wrong, and they cost more. Then I'm pretty much stumped.

Ahhh, I missed YOUR point. My apologies. From a brief search, the comparable price in the USA in 2005 was $275 per handgun. I'm sure it's well over $300 each by now. Other than the three I listed (Hi-Point, Rough Rider, Nagant), everything I've found here is much more spendy.

Anyone have any other options?

Not exactly a bargain basement price on a budget, but I saw 9mm and .40 S&W Sigmas like mine going for $299 used (and not very much used, by the looks of them).

The Maks used to be cheap, but no longer it seems...

I was going to suggest a Makarov as well. I just don't know if I could trust my life to a Nagant revolver, since it's main use seemed to be shooting political dissidents in the back of the head.

I think that a better plan would be to keep an eye out on the used gun market, eying specifically the used pistols and police trade-ins.

I do agree with your idea, however, and if I could figure out some perfect spots to hide a few, I'd be doing it with what I already own.

ETA: The simple solution is to carry in your own house.

My first thought was 'Sig P6', my second thought was 'Makarov'. Well if you can still find either one. If you can, DO SO.

I rather like the original idea, but it may not be so practical here in Jersey. You need an individual purchase permit for each handgun, which you must apply for. The application process is nearly as bad, and takes nearly as long, as applying for your FID in the first place. You can apply for as many handgun purchase permits at a time as you like but once you get then you have to use them in 90 days. After that, you have to apply for more purchase permits all over again. Yes it's a deliberate scheme to make it difficult for the law-abiding to exercise their rights. (Yes, I have had one expire unused. Things happened and I was just too damn busy to go gun shopping. It was the one I was going to use for a Buckmark. I even had full Domestic 6 backing on the purchase, too. Damn.)

Carrying in your own house is one of those 'easier said than done' things. Strategic stashes strike me as much more practical.
