My Home Invasion Experiences This Summer

Post by skb12172 »

For the second time this summer, I was awakened in the wee hours by the doorbell and my four-legged early warning system. In this area lately, the M.O. of Goblins all over town has been to ring the doorbell late at night, claiming an accident or emergency. This is what happened last night, in the most recent incident...

One clean-cut looking bad guy rang my doorbell in the middle of the night; in both cases at my house it was between 1 and 130am. Meanwhile, his buddies are either A) breaking into your house on the other side B) Crouching or laying down to either side of the front door to rush you when you open it. Instead of going to the front door, I assumed an elevated vantage point where I could see them. I could also see one of his buddies at the side window of my living room. That's the one my dog kept pointing out.

I called 911, then told them to freeze and wait for the cops while I had my SKS trained in their direction. Deciding that, even with Kentucky's castle doctrine, I wasn't willing to shoot someone while they were still outside of the house, I held my fire when they ran.

Now...if they had actually damaged the door/windows, thus proving they were actively trying to break in...

Actually, there was a guy in Lexington who DID fire through his front door last year, killing someone. The alleged bad guy was a drunk college kid who was pounding on the door at 2am because he had the wrong house. No charges were filed, but I personally don't consider it a justified shooting. I wouldn't want to take someone's life unless they were already in or working their way in to my hacienda. .

Anyway, all's well that ends well. I just wanted to share my experience and alert the rest of you, in case the use of this trend starts to spread to other parts of the country.
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

Sounds like an intercom system isn't a bad idea... Wonder if there's a way to have one work over a phone...

That's why I never answer the door unarmed. And I sure as hell am not going to open the door at o'dark thirty.

Sounds like you did good.

Besides having a peep hole in the front door and a security screen, we almost ALWAYS check who's at the door by using the bedroom window (covered by 1" venetian blinds & just enough opening to see out, but not see in) next to the front door.

I too, would not answer the door unarmed at 1:30 AM. Loaded guns are accessible all over the house, *IF* you know where they are. ;) ;) :D :D :D

Ya done good, and stop by the butcher shop and get your four legged warning system a meaty bone to gnaw on.

See now, if you'd set a bear trap out there, your four-legged warning system might actually get a warm & fresh piece of meat to gnaw on, and not just a little bone!!   ;) ;)

That happened here in town a while back, a young drunk guy pounded on the door of the wrong house, then proceeded to break the door in. He got ventilated for his trouble, DRT. The home owners got off due to Make My Day here in Colorado.

Did they see the SKS? If so, you might be able to track them by smell...

You did good. What did the cops say?

Of course, since no shots were fired, and no one died, this doe not count as a valid defensive use of a firearm. [/Brady Statistician Mode]

Glad it worked well, and that no one of consequence (i.e. you and your dog) were harmed. Sound like you got a good reaction plan.
