Very nice, Chris. Thanks for posting those pics.

My home defense gun is a Remington 870 Express Magnum, with an extended tube and an R3 recoil pad. I keep it stacked with 3" Magnum 00-buckshot (15 pellets per), and the last round fired is a 3" magnum hollow point slug. I didn't build my AR for home defense (though it would do a hell of a good job).
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Chris,

I thought you did stainless on your AR's?

Got Mr. 12 Gauge back from the 'Smith last week. Barrel now above the legal minimum, 6+1, 5 more on the stock, basic push button illumination and oversize charging handle. MUCH more maneuverable than before. He lives in the bedroom now.

On my PRECISION ARs, sure; but this is a defensive carbine. My accuracy standard is to be able to put 20 rounds into an 8" circle, offhand at 200 yards (the basic rule of combat marksmanship being, maintain an accuracy of half your target size at your desired maximum range, so even if your POA is off by 50% you will sill make a good shot. The average human torso being approximately 16" wide, and the kill zone on a human head is 8" wide).

If I'm shooting at more than 200 yards with an 18" upper, I'm doing something wrong.
Do go the chrome lined barrel, or is that too inaccurate? Have you heard anything good bad or indifferent about the nitro-carburized process.... this site talks it up as if it a replacement for SS?

I was thinking about the 16" 7.62 barrel....

How good of a shot are you? Are you going to compete with this rifle? I am not being funny, unless you can get one hole groups out of your rifle, chrome lined will make zero difference in general accuracy. But it will make it easier to clean and as a shooter, easy to clean is high on my list. As for the coating, remember it is a coating, not a materiel difference. Stainless has different properties than carbon steel barrels. Coating rub off but again for the most part, it will make zero difference to most people. Go with cost effective and quality and have a ball. For a 16" plinker a CMMG bargain bin rifle is the best bet for most shooters to built from.

Unless your goal is to build a solid accurate rifle, or one from the best components or one that matches mil-spec etc start basic and build from there. I have done all three of the above BTW, plus more. I have ton of AR's in different configurations and I can barely tell the difference some days between the two in practical use.
