I think those safes have eproms in them - even when you remove the battery, once you put it back in, it will work again.

I understand about the eeproms, but still not the "reset the lock" bit...

EDIT: Re-reading the thread, it seems the battery was dead?

I'd willfully forgotten about this thread. Better it stand as a warning to others.

Yes, DD: the short story is, the battery was dead. The explanation was, I threw away the battery that came with the safe, and opened a NEW package of 9V batteries and put one in. Then, when the safe appeared to malfunction, in my mind I dismissed that part of the troubleshooting because I had already eliminated it. Finally, after things went tango uniform, I decided to replace the battery again and - voila! - everything worked.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Was that the second battery (my safe has TWO batteries), or did you need to replace the same battery TWICE?

The safe only has one battery.
