I called it an early b'day present and ordered a pair of the 8x56 Burris. A bit bigger than I've ever carried much in the field but honestly I don't cover near as much ground in the field as I used to and sit in stands more.
Besides, 95% of my bino time is out the front window bird, coyote & neighbor watching so this larger low light pair will be nice. We get lots of bird action on our lot and down/across the hillside out to 4-500 meters.

These ones from Pentax sound about right, or you could try to find small army-surplus binos (we used to refer to these as "Rommels" when sailing).workinwifdakids wrote:I grew up as a backpacker; I imagine that weight and size both increase price and/or diminish quality. In that $250 range, is there a pair of binoculars designed for backpacking?
If you go much smaller, you're into folding binocular territory, and good ones of those cost a fair bit more $$$.

ETA: those binos are showing as "sold out" on Camofire now. I wonder how many they were selling at that price...?

We use our binos for coyote spotting and checking out the aircraft flying overhead from Gillespie Field, particularly the old WWII warbirds.

Yeah we get the south leg of the Gillespie pattern directly overhead some days -- esp during airshows.
Now you have me thinking about a pair of big eyes on a tripod in the front window. LOL. I bet we could see pretty good all the way down to the planes turning final. That's gotta 3-4 miles at least.

TBTOH arrived today and left my new binos. Yeah. These are nice. Real nice.
Looking forward to a twilight test. If I can get back home in time after a school function.

Ok. It's official. I've had these binoc's less than 24 hours and I'm officially ruined for cheap blisterpack glass.
I checked these out in the dim morning light test before breakfast. Ohhhhh, yeaaaaaahhh. Better than my eyes. Way better. Good light, great resolution, real colors... Gonna love these in the field.

Thread necromancy alert.
I read Chris' post on his blog about binoculars, but Kruger wasn't listed. Woot! has a marine 7x50 porro prism set for $89.00. Good deal or not?
