Hate crimes to me fall into the same abyss as "no tolerance" policies.

It's politics, it's not law.

I'm 63, white, Jewish, and I walk with a cane. You think if I'm mugged in (thankfully) "gun-free" Chicago, it would be be a hate crime if the perpetrators were another race?

Some laws are just stupid.

The perpetrators of this crime are at least guilty of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, battery, and perhaps, attempted murder. Regardless of the races in question.

They should be hanged.
I think torture should be added to your list.

I agree with the fact that hate crimes are the closest things we have in the real world to "thought crimes" . But damn, turn about is fair play.

I agree, it shouldn't be that one group doesn't get to use the laws like the rest of them do.

Tortured, then hanged?

Sounds about right...

UPDATE: Two suspects were stopped and released that night with dried blood on their faces. I don't know why police didn't have probable cause to detain them, but at least they have names and evidence.

Hopefully they took samples of the blood before releasing them!

>>UPDATE <<
Two men have been charged in connection with the May 25 assault of a 16-year-old West Seattle boy who said he was attacked by two men who made racially charged statements. The men remain at large.

Seattle police are searching for Ahmed Mohamed and Jonathan Baquiring in connection with the attack, according to charging paperwork filed this week in King County Superior Court. Once the two men are arrested prosecutors plan to ask that they remain in jail on $500,000 bail, charging papers said.

The attack occurred near 14th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Holden Street. Police have been investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.
Apparently they had to wait for the state crime lab to confirm that the blood on the perps hands was that of the victim.
On Sept. 8, Seattle police received a report from the State Patrol Crime Laboratory and were told that swabs taken from both men's hands matched McClellan's DNA, charging papers said. The two men were charged on Monday with first-degree robbery and malicious harassment, the state's hate crime statute.
I'm glad that progress is being made. I hope the prosecutor has a strong case. I'm still supprised that the police didn't think they had enough to arrest these guys on the spot. I feel bad for the kid who had to live in the same neighborhood a these punks for four months while the gears of justice turned.

Ahmed Mohamed
Any bets on that being his chosen name after joining the Nation of Islam inside a prison?

Re: Hate Crime and attempt

Post by Windy Wilson »

In addition to the hate crime enhancement, I am troubled by the reduction for mere attempt. If some choir boy shoots someone, and the bullet misses the heart and the aorta, so the victim does not bleed out before the paramedics arrive and haul him to the hospital, where modern medicine and the ministrations of doctors and nurses save his life, why is that mere attempted murder, when it was just the variation of bullet and handgrip and the luck of the medical care that caused it to not be completed murder? There was no intent for mere attempted murder, the attempt was to actually commit murder, and dumb luck saved them both.

Some attempts should not get the reduction because it wasn't completed.
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .
