That was why I was laughing reading this moron talking out his @$$.
i suppose it might be illegal in some states, but that wouldnt be enforced by an ATF sting
Yeah, it would...remember that the BATF(U) can, will and do make up their own rules as they see fit for harassment but in this case they would be justified as the smith is knowingly altering a firearm to accept a felonious accessory--unless licensed and tax stamped and proof presented at time of order...

Not sure where you are coming from but a threaded barrel is not a criminal piece of property. Since barrels are considered parts and not firearms, they should be completely legal to thread so long as state law does not make that illegal.

Owning a suppressor is not illegal nor is it a "felonious accessory," you just have to have proper paperwork to do it.

Threading can also be used to attach muzzle breaks and flash hiders which are not illegal in almost every state.

And again, since there is no rule or regulation from the ATF that says that barrels are anything other than parts, the ATF would have zero reason to investigate. Violation of a state law governing threaded barrels is none of the ATF's business and i doubt that they would even care.

So, mekender, you are under the impression that BATF agents

1. Have actually read the law

2. Understand the law

3. Have a technical understanding of firearms

4. Could give a rat's ass about 1-3 if they get in the way prosecutions that give them good press and earn points toward promotions.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the opposite for a large percentage of ATF personnel.

While i would normally agree, i think that the desire for a state agency like say the SBI here in NC would be greater... as in they would throw a fit if the ATF tried to take jurisdiction in a matter that they didnt have authority to do so in. the state agency is just as greedy for power as the feds so i can see them fighting it out, frankly fights like that are what help keep some of the power balance.

Have you by chance kept up with the bullshit that BATF(U) caused Red's or any of the 300+ gun dealers these last five years...Not the ones that Mayor Bloomberg, the ass hole, wants closed because they are selling guns to New Yorkers--he says illegally, but just Joe Blow Smiths who wrote the name in lower case instead of Upper and Lower case or who put the # symbol instead of writing out Apartment and were closed down… those MFKing bastards, seized all of the gun stock, including spare parts, gun oil and reloading manuals and Gun Rags so they couldn't even sell off their goods to fight them and eventually had to close down because they couldn't afford the legal fees to fight...

Read some of the shit in the NRA, RKBA, GOA, JPFO web sites and get a glimpse of what those scum sucking Neanderthals Fascist rat bastards can come up with weekly to hassle the store keeper, who in turn then hassles us…

I believe the latest figure is that gunsmiths & store front dealers are down by 70% from 40 years ago and very few are stepping up to fill the void...Even with the Internet and home based business by mail order only still hasn't brought the figures of “dealers” up significantly...The reason, so many senseless bullshit rules and regulations for the store keeper to comply with...

I did mention, now underlined, that tax stamp had to be paid for, but if it wasn't, if I knowlingly built a threaded pistol barrel for an illegal silencer then I would be at fault and arrested...Like maybe in California...Not many pistol barrels of 3" or 4" have muzzle brakes (porting sure, brakes no) and I'll not count the 14" Encore barrels in 500 S&W or other maga boomer, wrist breakers...

i know it isnt in NC
California. The p22 is an illegal "assault weapon" in CA because of the threaded barrel. There was a big problem with that a few years ago because the Attorney Generals office initially had it on the CA approved list, for the first 3 years of the guns production.
They now make a California version of the P22, and it's on the approved list.
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON

A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.

I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

yea i have read the stories about the ATF and every one of those cases was a violation of federal law (or ATF regulations) not state law... the bloomberg cases were conducted by state (or city) agencies not by the ATF and in fact some of those cases have come under federal flack as illegal straw purchases (violation of federal law)

now the original claim was that .357 barrels were getting threaded... so you have 3 choices here... a revolver, a long gun (lever gun probably) or a .357sig... my bet would be on the .357sig but who knows...

as for the tax stamp being necessary first... by what law do you have to have the can and stamp before you get a barrel threaded? if that were the case, buying a P-22 (or even some HK's) outside of CA would be illegal too.

I am sorry for the confusion, the "gunsmith" in question was referring to revolver barrels and if memory serves was posting from CO or someplace similar. I am trying to find the thread again but ran across it quite a while ago.

well i dont know of any reason to thread a revolver barrel except for to mount a muzzle device, probably a break... a silencer will not work for reasons discussed above.
